I have a 98 4x4 v8 5.2 (about 115,000 mi.).
Pinging occurred while accellerating (it was a loud clacking/rattling noise) and then my check engine light came on, which leads me to believe it's related to my cat. (it rattles on & off lately). I've driven it since then and have not heard the noise but check eng. light still on. Also, a few days before, while in 4 wheel drive I was making a sharp turn and it seemed as though my brake was on, but it wasn't, took out of 4wd and was ok. I always put 98 to 91 ocatane gas as well, fluids are all ok and nothing seems to be loose. ??

That light will come on for lots of things besides the cat - having the code read will help pinpoint the problem. What you felt in 4WD sounds like normal 4x drive train stiction. If you look straight down your throttle body with a flashlight, do you see a pool of oil ?
