Subject: Pinging noise

Message:
Recently when I was accellerating I heard a loud pinging/rattling noise (almose like doing 20 mph in 5th gear, or how a diesel sounds). Any idea's where I should start? My catalytic conv. rattles alot lately and that's almost the same sound I heard but louder.
Any advice much appreciated.

If you cat is rattling (as in it is bad) it could be causing your O2 sensor(s) to read wrong and, in turn, screw up your fuel/air mixture which, I believe, will cause pinging. Is your truck throwing up any codes?

I have a 99 dakota v8 . I used to always ping when under load or up a hill until I switched to 89 octane .No More pinging ...way better but if not I agree with jpkomm.

Good luck
