Subject: Rattling Noise

Message:
I bought the truck in May of 2004, and it's made this weird noise since I bought it. Other than this, the truck is fine. I didn't mind the sound much at first, but now it annoys the hell out of me. Anyways, under very low acceleration and full throttle, I don't get the noise. It's when I give it that mid-range acceleration (shifting at about 3k RPMs) that I get this rattling sound. It rattles at the end of the gear just as the tranny is shifting (4-spd auto). I don't know what it is, and I've asked before but can't get a straight answer. It annoys the hell out of me. I just wanna hear a smooth engine tone, not some crappy rattling noise. It's hard to tell where it's coming from. Don't think it's the engine. Maybe the cat (stock, POS cat)?

Any help is appreciated, thanks!

BTW: It's a 1997 CC 318 4x4

Most likely it is the cat. get under there with a rubber mallet or dead blow hammer. your fist might work if your on the tuff side. hit the cat in the middle. if it rattles you found it'

So many problems .... So little time

while you're under there, check the whole exhaust system for play. it may be just touching off a cross member or frame rail etc.. just at the 3000 mark. less then that it might not be touching, more then that and it may be fully onto it so it wouldn't rattle.
