Favorite brand of gas?

At 87 octane, does one brand ping less?

I was having problems with all 87's pinging like hell in my truck, so I went to 89 octane. The 87's with the most ping were from Exxon and Shell, the 87 with the least was from BP.

If it doesn't fit, force it. If it breaks...well...it needed to be replaced anyway.

87 from Chevron. I get a little ping too. I'm going to try BP next time. I heard some good things about it from another person.

I usually get my gas at kroger, racetrac, QuikTrip or BP. I have had no issues with gas from any of these places. The stations I shop at are all high volume so gas doesn't sit. I'm there at off hours so there's nothing floating around in the tanks while they refill.

whatever is cheaper. i don't have any ping issues and they all basically run the same in my truck with one exception, Spirit(Amoco). it seems to run a little smoother with the Amooco.

BP/Amoco seems to run the best in all the vehicles I've owned. I've only gotten one bad tank of gas from a BP station over the course of 9 years (bought it at a very very old station). Citgo or QT would be my next choices. Texaco and Racetrac have the worst track record with me. Every tank of Texaco I've bought has run rough. Racetrac was OK till I realized how much water was in their fuel. Had one fuel filter that was full of it. That may just be the business practices of our local branch though.

I use my local Shell station most times. Only
reason why is their pumps have less pressure so
I can get a full tank when I fill up.

Also, I'd guess if you're getting pinging from
any name brand of 87 octane, you may need a tune
up including checking the timing.

i usualy get the top tier stuff from kwik trip, a local chain of stores based out of LaCross (i think) Wisconsin, they are basicly WI, iowa, and Mn
i get my diesel from there too usualy
Mn sucks becuase its all 10% ethanol and 2% minimum biodeisel
good concept, i jsut dont like the fact it gets worse fuel economy

1990 sport RC SB, 1995 318drivetrain, 3.92 gears (came with truck) 95 dash/steering wheel, hearthrob exhaust, headers, cutout after y-pipe, necessary electric fan add-a-leafs, 30x9.5 mud tires, cranked T-bars, AR 39 15x8 rims, grill guard, roll bars

Gas is gas.
The Shell you put in your car could come from any refinery. The additives are added as the truck is filled.
A short little ping is a good sign. If it pings for longer than a few seconds, under load, you may want to go up a notch in octane.
Cadillac, Pontiac, Sonoma, Dakota, Prelude, Volvo; some of my cars I've tried using premium gas in. All got lower mileage and decreased performance.
FYI.

Well yes, if your engine is not made for premium (i.e higher compression ratio, extreme performance) then the higher the octane, the less flamable (simplest explanation) the fuel is. Equals less power, less fuel economy, more fuel dilution of the oil, etc. Pre-ignition is never a "good" sign no matter how little, but it is acceptable in SMALL doses:)

If it doesn't fit, force it. If it breaks...well...it needed to be replaced anyway.

Sorry but with all due respect, by the time you can hear a ping of any kind it is a lot worse then you think. If you could put a stephscope to your engine with say a barely audiable ping it would break your ear drums or close to it. ping is not wanted in any form ever.

So many problems .... So little time

This is contradictory. At the pump, all gas is not the same. At the storage farms, the gas is all essentially the same. But the additives that are put into each brand's delivery truck are proprietary and different.

Mobil for over 15 years now has added the same detergent level to all its grades of gas. Shell recently followed suit. Most of the others put up to 5 times LESS detergent in 87 octane as in 93. So if you want to keep fuel injectors clean, 'gas is not gas'. Go with a good brand.

Bob,
Thank you for clarifying.
There is a differance. With the Volvo, I used Arco exclusively. Had to replace two of the injectors, and they cleaned the other two. A while later, another dealer replaced two injectors, on warranty, and cleaned two. I figure I ended up with four new injectors for the cost of two.
I have never had any other fuel problem in over a million miles, with various vehicles. Suppose it was the gas?

Obio3 & cuzindoug,
Of course you are right. What I was referring to was the instant ping that sometimes occurs immediately on stomping on the gas. I may even be thinking carb technology, and be totally out of line for injection. In the old days you could assume your timing was pretty well set that way.

My 98 Dakota has gone 500,000 miles; almost all of it using gas from Costco. In the San Francisco Bay Area, that fuel comes from the cheapest supplier, sometimes two or three different refineries a day. So said the manager of the Concord store, where they average four deliveries a day. The point here is that the source does not matter, it is all the same gas at the source.

All the above is why, from time to time, I pour in some Amsoil PI, to be sure the fuel system is clean.

Is there an amsoil plug in EVERY thread?

I use Valero & Conoco. 87 pings under hard accelaration in my 318, 89 does not.

BTW - Citgo is owned by Venezuela...so I don't buy their gas.

I use phillips 89 almost exclusively. Mainly because i know the owners and used to work for them. It is also seems much cleaner and higher quality then the other stations in town except for the BP. If i'm out of town i try to find a BP. I find that i get about 30 miles more out of a tank of 89 versus 87, so at five cents a gallon more (only about $1 more per tank) i find it's worth it
