I was just wondering about replaceing my headlight bulbs in my 2000 dodge dakota. I never took anything apart yet but was looking at how to get at the bulbs.? I can reach one bulb(drivers side) from the back of the headlight lens but was wondering about the passenger side one, I can't get at the bulb from the back..... I was mainly concerned with removing the headlight lense without screwing up the headlight alignment. Can the headlight lens be removed without touching the alignment screws? I know it's not a big deal to realign my headlights but want to avoid it if I can.

The manual i have does not show headlight replacement.

THanks in advance

Glen

I had mine replaced twice the last few months, once when I switched from stock to crappy PIAA Star whites cause I thought they'd be better. The second time a set of GE Nighthawks went on. Both times I had a shop do it, they were able to reach down and yank the bulbs from behind. No re-aiming necessary, no affect on the aim of the headlights. They're kinda hard to get to and you have to twist your arm at an awkward position and keep it like that while you unscrew the bulb. The first time the truck accessory shop changed them without a problem. The second time I tried to get a mechanic to do it. I guess he was feeling lazy, he said he'd have to charge me alot of cash to unbolt certain stuff rom the front of the truck to get to them. Then went to Pep boys. They did it just by reaching in and unscrewing the bulbs but said they were kinda hard to get to.

easyiest way to remove both:
1)remove the airbox assembly.
2)remove the battery.

do that and all else is easy without wrecking your headlight alignment.

HEadlights I never had to align so I never bothered to study the various diagrams aind instruction sheets on the net too closely. Fogs there's a basic rule of thumb you can find on the pilot website that's the same for most other places. IT says that the top of the fog beam should be a 4-5 inches below the center of the hot spot at about 25 yards. If you don't have a place to take such a precise measurement, a more general estimate is when the headlights are properly aimed the top of the fog beam should just barely touch the bottom of the headlight beam at 20 feet or so. I monkeyed around with my aftermarket fogs quite a bit until it became apparant that the ruling on the pilot website put the fog beam right where it was most effective.

All the headlight aiming diagrams I've seen are too confusing to me so I'd just take it to a dealership for that.
