Subject: Larry! ever used halo plugs in V8s?

This is geared toward larry because he's suggested using the halo plugs several times. Anyone who has used these plugs in V8's let me know your thoughts. Every reference I see is for the V6 though. Have you ever used them in the V8s?

I have a 2002 QC 4x4 4.7L. I'm nearing 60k so time to change the plugs. I'm considering the halo for extra gas milage but $8-9 each is hefty price (I guess not so much considering I don't need plug wires so total cost of tune-up is about the same). Since changing from stock air filter to pure one premium filter, I've add .5 mpg. I want to add as much milage as i can. I'm satisfied with the performance for now.

Dan. Your thoughts are great . Every bodies dream is finding that one magic item that will Make a diferance you can Smile about. I'm 63. HAD a shop for over 40 years. At a time past I to Thought there just had to be a plug that could do wonders. It never happened. Most were taken with a grain of salt. Some were pricey just like the halo is. none did a thing worth talking about except the package I use now and have for years. The point is. lets say you got another 1/2 mpg . At the price , how long would it take to regain your extra investment. What you need to remember is , the plug can only light the fire and the fire spreads to the rest of the cylender. It does this so fast, in our minds we think of it as an instant explosion. You slow this down to say camp fire speed you easily see what I'm saying. You light the fire and it slowly spreads to the rest of the burnable material. Bottom line is, The plug is only the fire starter. You want the best milage possibe, Keep the intire system in top condition. It starts with a good battery and alternator working correctly with good wiring,A good coil, Good plug wires, dist cap and rotor and a dist in perfect working condition. Then use a new set of plugs of normal price and you now can smile cause it is as good as it gets. Just my opinion obtained from my life long experance. It's your money. Spend it as you want. I should mention, my 5.2 4x4 cc 99 gets 18.3 highway with cruise set at 78 mph. This is at over 5,000 feet altitude. I go to the coast at least once a year . Altitude 200 feet. I get 20 plus at sea leval. I think this is a lot better then most do. 78mph isn't draging my feet either.

So many problems .... So little time

Obio3 - a few further comments.

I put alot of effort into maintaining my vehicles. I'm one of the people who actually checks tire pressure every 30 days as recommended.

My 02 has a distributorless system. Coils sit on top of the plugs. No wires, no cap, no rotor. So the cost of the halos (9x8=$72) would be about the cost of a distributor based tuneup (plugs, wires, cap, rotor).

I've read everything google will give me on the halo plugs. everything has been positive. Some have reported up to 10% increase in mpg. I am currently getting just under 16 mpg combined (15.7-15.9). Changing out my air filter to a pure one premium added about .5 mpg. Every little bit helps. That is good for a 4.7L v8 4x4 considering my old 95 3.9L 4x4 got 17-18 combined. Adding 10% to my just under 16 to give me around 17.5 mpg. Wow! That is the same as my old 6 cylinder. And I've got more power and torque.

I'm banking on the halo plugs being a more efficient spark/burn than regular plugs. A more efficient burn yields better milage and power and reduced emissions.

I have no idea what all is in the truck yet, I just purchased it in Jan.

Everything I have read in the past 5 months or so about E3 plugs or similar halo models show zero to even less performance/mileage gains than standard plugs. They did show that the plugs lasted a lot longer though (less prone to fouling). I'll see if I can dig up some of those test for you, Dan. It has been a while since I've read them, so it may take a while for me to find them. Have you thought about swapping your tranny fluid and gear oil (front and rear diff) with synthetic? That gave me a hefty mpg increase alone.

Yes, I am going to switch all of the other fluids to synthetic. I'm even going synthetic on brake fluid when the time comes for me to do brakes :D

I just bought the truck in Jan and have not done any changes yet, I was holding off until time to do so per maintenance intervals.

I actually didn't realize there was a synthetic brake fluid out there. Hmm.. thanks for letting me know about that, Dan. I'll have to look for it next time I'm at the parts store.

Yeah, since you haven't really done a whole lot to the truck, I'd recommend doing fluids first. You'll notice a difference almost right away. Either go with Amsoil Universal ATF or Mobil 1's Synthetic ATF (which you can get at Autozone I believe). Royal Purple also makes a synthetic ATF I believe. I'd probably get a flush done the first time you do it though to get rid of all the old fluid--especially if it was ATF +3. Then you can do regular changes with the pan drops. Just make sure they do a geniune flush with a filter change.

With the combo of synthetic motor oil, gear lube, and tranny fluid, I get between 18 and 22mpg on flat highway with my stock 2000 Dak CC SLT 4x4 4.7L. Kinda hard to gauge things here in the North Georgia mountains though with all the hills, but that is pretty much what I get once I get out of the hilly areas.

Thanks for that link too. I'll read it here in a bit.

Dan I see your point. Don't do plugs and fluids at the same time or you won't have a clue if one or buth helped. On the plugs. The only way the halo or any other plug will make a bit of differance is if they cause the engine NOT to miss fire as much as others do. All plugs I know of have miss fires. More so on the highway.A will tuned engie will fire around 98% of the time. You just don't realize it cause your ears are not quick enough to tell unless you had a serious miss. I wasn't thinking of the system on your truck. That does save ome tuneup bucks. Good luck on your quest for milage. I think the fluids is where the differance wil be found. Let us know after you run it a thousand miles or 2. I have amsoil in my gears and yes it made a differance mostly in power but a pinch better mulage.

jpkomm I didn't realize there was synthetic brake fluid either until I did the brakes on my old 95 late last year. When I went in to get the parts, I picked up the prestone from advance auto parts. Makes sense they make it, I just had no need for it until then so I never looked.

obio3 good point about making too many changes at once. You never know what is good or bad and to what extent. That's just good scientific procedure.

I'm at 54k so plenty of time to make my decisions. If i decide not to go with the halo plugs I'll be going with the champion truck plugs. I'm done with performance now, it's time to learn a thing or two about milage.
