Subject: Rear Axel Question

Message:
Hi,
I have an 04 dakota (3.7 L). The serivce manual recommends changing the rear axle fluid every 15,000 miles! I was wondering if anybody does this. This seems quite often!! I have 30,000, and haven't changed it yet. I'm thinking about chaninging it now, however, I got underneath it and can't find the drain plug, and refill area. Can you help? Thanks

Drain it by removing the bolts on the inspection cover and popping the cover off. Clean the gasket surface and seal with RTV Sealer. Refill with synthetic lube of your choice for best results.

The fluid in the rear end of these rigs isn't all that great... so 15k sounds about right. Mine was at 25k before it was changed. It was chattering really bad. I, and most everyone else on here, would recommend your putting synthetic fluid in it as a replacement. Some choices are Amsoil, Redline, Royal Purple, etc. I'm sure there are other synthetic brands out there, but I can't think of any more off-hand. After switching it to synthetic, it should have much much longer service life. Good luck!

How many quarts does it hold out of curiosity?

If it is a 9.25" rear end, like on my 2000, it will be about 2.5 quarts worth. It will be slightly over 2 quarts on a 8.25" rear end. Is yours a 2wd or a 4wd?

Did mine at 12K but not since. Make sure you do the front too if its a 4x4 and put the friction addidive in too if its a limited slip.
