Subject: 3.7L vs 4.0L

slightly off topic but figured you all would have some valuable input on this.

My wife is really interested in the 07 Dodge Nitro. She has a 4 banger grand am and wants to trade it in for something more powerful than the 4 banger.

The Nitro comes with 3.7L and 4.0L V6s. The 4.0L is available in the Nitro R/T. I could not find anything definative, but am thinking this is the same 4.0L found in the jeeps. Anyone know if this is correct?

Obviously the 3.7L is the next Gen 3.9L and we all know the 3.9L was not known for power but was a solid workhorse (traded mine in after 10 years and 167k miles of use with no major mechanical problems). Seems that the 3.7L is proving itself to be as reliable as the 3.9L. Anyone have any contradictory information on the 3.7L?

Anyone know anything about the 4.0L?

My guess is that the gas milage will be 1 maybe 2 mpg difference between the 3.7L and 4.0L so that's not so much of a concern. I guess it'll all come down to cost. My big concern is that the 07 Nitro is a 1st edition and I've never been a fan of anything 1st edition. If the engines are reliable enough and as easy to work on as the 3.9L then I'm in good shape.

The Jeep 4.0L engine is a straight-six, not a V6. I'm guessing this 4.0L engine is another animal. I would say you have nothing to freta bout should you go the 3.7L route.

Just as the 3.9L is the 5.2L engine minus two pistons, the 3.7L is a 4.7L minus two pistons (and a slightly longer stroke). The 3.9/5.2/5.9 engines run forever. The 4.7L engine is showing to be without endemic problems and in time will be as long-lasting as the old engines being phased out.

What's your left foot doing?

Dodge's web site says it is a 4.0L V6 with 255HP (210 for the 3.7). My assumption is that it is a larger 3.7, but I can't confirm it.

There, found some further info. The 4.0L in the Nitro is a larger version of the 3.5L, not the 3.7L.

if the 4.0 is based off of the older 3.5s that was is the LHS,intrupid,s and 300M,s it should be a very strong runner and reliable plus good mpg,it would be worth a look

The old 244 I6 has been discontinued and will be replaced with a newer OHV 3.8 V6. Also the Nitro rides off the Liberty platform but good look hitting the trails with it.
