Subject: Painting my Dakota

Message:
Hey everyone...
I'd like to have my dakota painted in the next 6 months or so, and I would like some suggestions as to what would look good, and how you recommend doing it. I own a 93 extended cab. Right now it's the green and tan color and surprisingly it's not rusty anywhere. I'd like to give the truck a bad-ass look. I was thinking of painting it all Black, with red or gold flakes in the clearcoat. Some people have told me that's not a good idea with the flakes, but I don't know why. Any suggestions?
Also, is painting something I can pick up as a hobby, or would it take a long time to learn the fundamentals? If I've never done it, should I not worry about learning and find someone I can pay to do it? Thank you for any input!

Its a very hard and costly hobby to pick up. If you dont do it right the very first time you will have to strip it down and start over again. All the equipment you will need is also really expensive to get a quality job. Find a quality paint shop and have them do it.

Any idea how much I can expect to pay for a professional to do it? I'll start looking around tomorrow to see what places around here do that kind of work.

I would recommend you search out someone who works at a body shop and works out of his home shop for some extra money. I had someone paint my truck who did this and did a great job for $2600 including painting and installing the hood, the stripe, and the flames. I took it back to him when someone hit me in the rear quarter panel. He fixed the dent from the accident, one on the other side that happened in a shopping center, fixed the bumper, and touched up other paint damage, all for $700 less than the insurance company paid for the one dent. A paint shop would charge a lot more than $2600 for the work I got.
