Subject: viper engine swap is legal
IP: Logged

Message:
I know this has been brought up before but i have stumbled onto some interest finds. Ive looked on the California air pollution site and under engine changes it states that you can change your engine as long as the new engine is of a newer year and has to retain all the emissions systems belonging to the new engine. It also says the new motor must come from the same class of vehicles. So what Im getting at is the dodge srt10 weighs in at 5500 pounds and is in the light truck class as is the dakota. Is it a legal swap????? something to think about!!!

Are you nutso? By the time you modify your dakota to get the much bigger engine to fit you may as well just have bought a viper to begin with. You will probably have to modify firewall, frame members, engine mounts, radiator, drive line and maybe rear end. You would have a much easier time sticking a 426 hemi in it than that v-10.

You have a point there. So change that to 5.7 hemi. But it still would be quite expensive to stick the V-10 Viper engine on a Dakota platform though I'm sure it could be done.

the viper 8.3 liter only has two more cylinders. It really isnt any wider , only a little longer. A 426 or 6.1L hemi would work to as long as the emissions came along with it. MONEY you say think about this , I have a 2000 quad cad and it's paid for . a new dakota like the one I have is 30+ grand. So I could buy a 8.3 liter on ebay for 10,000 with the t56 trans and wire harness all included. have the drive shaft shortend 300.00 . maybe by a built dana 60 fror the rear end 2-2500. Im still under 15,000 think about it. If I had my 4.7 rebiult to except a a blower with enough boost to acheive the 500hp Im at like 5000 there and then another 5000 for the blower and Im still not into my trans yet . Not to mention it will all be illegal. since you cant port the heads or even modify your computer and the only choice of legal cams are the HO's.
The only thing I would have to do to the frame is slide the cross members back a few inches and Ive seen that picture of the dakota with the viper 8.3l installed and I see no mods to the fire wall. Also Ive seen guys talking about wieght, think about it your trading a cast Iron block for an aluminum one. Now what do you think!!!!!!!!

I say if you have the desire to do it, DO IT!

I've got a CAR in my Garage and an extra 4.7 I'm rebuilding to stick in it. Almost EVERYBODY has told me to just go with a 440, 360, etc and build that up. But I really want to see a 4.7 OHC in a car. Plus it's LIGHT and under bosst, a STOCK 4.7 block will be over 500 HP.
The cost to repair this used engine is more than I thought it would be, BUT I have in my mind what I want to do with the car so I am NOT giving up.

Anyway. I say if you want to make the V10 engine work, DO IT! If you can pull it off it would be great because many would not attempt to do so and it will be rare. I only know of like ONE V10 Dakota I saw online somewhere. If it was even real.
I don't know of ANY 4.7 Dusters. So I hope mine is the first!

only one problem GraphiteDak, There is no way in hell the 4.7 at 500hp would be completly legal and thats what its all aimed at. It is illegal to modify the inside of your engine . A 4.7L with 6-8 psi of boost is only going to get you about 330 hp. Beyond that its heavy modifying and big dollars. Not to mention that stock tranny isnt going to handle 500hp and 525 tork. I think getting to 500hp with a viper 8.3 l is not only the cheapest way but also is the coolest and street legal. I dont live in Cali. either but they have the stickest emissions laws so that should be the standard. If it passes there it's good anywhere. I'm at Ft. Bragg NC.

I have a 97' dakota 4x4. am ready to swap out engines. Have two choices. The 5.7 hemi or I have access to an 8.3 viper. Does anyone know where I can get info on either swap? Really would like to put viper in but can be happy either way.
Thanks!!
