Subject: Vibration/Wobbling Noise issue !!HELP!!
IP: Logged

Message:
Hi all,
I really hoping someone can help me out here or point me in the right direction before I have to shell out $95 just to have Dodge find the problem.

I have, what can best be described as a whump-whump-whump kind of wobbling noise (but there is no actual wobbling or bad vibrations). It is rotational with the speed of the vehicle, that can be felt extremely well in the floorboard where the dead peddle would usually be. It's not shaking the steering wheel that I can tell (except possibly at higher speeds although that could be our poor interstates in IL, I'm not sure).

I have brand new tires (1 week old), brand new brakes (1 day old, whole new front system, serviced back), a full alignment (yesterday), and the ball joints were replaced a while back on the recall. The shocks are only about 1.5 years old.

It has been going on since January, I started futsin with it a few weeks ago, $1,200 later the problem is still there and I'm going insane. Let me know what you think.

Thanks!!

When you jack up the problem wheel and spin it, does it still make the noise? Could be a wheel bearing getting funky. They're supposed to be inspected/repacked every 30k miles I believe.

I had it on a lift at my buddy's place and it didn't make the noise (that we could tell) when we turned it. But it's hard to get it up to that speed by hand.
I thought it was the wheel bearings in the very begninning but I had a mechanic look at it and they said structurally everything was fine and it might be my worn tires. I'm wondering now if they missed something........

That's what another friend of mine was thinking as well.

Can I check for an unbalanced axle in my driveway with a jack? If so, how do I do that (would it wobble?). Or is that something that requires a mechanic to check out?

If it happened after the new tires, go back there. Occasionally a tire doesn't seat properly and they miss it and sometimes the tire is bad, or the guy just screwed up the balancing.

No, the problem was present prior to the new tires, new breaks and alignment. I thought all that would fix the problem, but it didn't, It's still there.

It's possible, the shocks have a lifetime warranty and they're only about 1.5 to 2 years old. The ball joints too were replaced under recall not a year or two ago.

I called my local Firestone, they said they'd look at it for free. At this point, and after $1,200, I can't hurt to have someone else look at it.

Is it rhythmic? Does it do it whether you are turning or going straight? Fritz could be right in thinking it may be a U-joint. What year/model, etc is your truck? Is it an all wheel drive model?

To many unknowns here . First off.... Is the thump at tire/axle speed or is it at drive line speed(much faster). Got to do a process of elimination first to cut down on guessing.

So many problems .... So little time

Here's a silly question: Could it be your engine vibrating? Recently my vibration dampener (a.k.a harmonic balancer separated from the pulley. I could actually move the balancer in and out about 1/4".

About 2 weeks after I bought my R/T in 99' I felt a strange wobbling in my truck. got out and checked the tires and wheels and looked underneath the best i could and didn't see anything. Drove about another mile and my driveshaft came off at the rear end. Looked like the cheap aluminum end just twisted off from around the u-joint. So I guess it would make sence to check that connection if I ever felt that wobble again. LOL

Jason,

What year and how many miles on the truck? I have an 01 that developed that kind of noise and it disappeared after replacing the front hub assembly. It was the wheel bearing, but since it is a sealed unit, had to replace the whole assembly. Fixed it for me. By the way, I had 89k on the odometer when it happended to me. I could feel mine thru the floor board and on the accelerator as well.

The longer I own my Dakota the better I get at diagnosing its problems. I'm glad to see other people are thinking the u-joints and/or driveshafts might be at fault. It's very cheap to fix but very expensive if it breaks on you while you're driving. That having been said, I don't know how to balance a driveshaft once you've replaced the u-joints. If someone could tell us how to check and adjust the balance, that'd be awesome. Maybe by blocking the front tires, putting up the rear on jack stands, then putting a dial indicator against the rear driveshaft? (Similar, with two more jack stands, for the front driveshaft on 4x4s.)

Rare to have to balance a drive shaft and I know of no one that does this. I do know places that build them and again they do not balance them. Carefull construction gets them close enough BUT... The car manufacturers do balance there drive shafts as indicated by the small metal blockes seen on them at times. Your job is to mark your shaft at both ends so you get the shaft with new joints back on exactly as it was removed . Also mark the shaft yoke and shaft so you get the splin back together exactly as you removed it. this keeps the total package on plain Just as it was from the factory and you should be in as good of shape as possible.

So many problems .... So little time

ObiWonDakota you had it, that is exactly what i was feeling (113k by the way on mine)
however the mechanic I took it to the first time missed it! which really pisses me off.

It was the wheel bearings all along! Although I did need brakes and tires i spent all that money and it didn't fix the problem. I took it to Firestone on friday, and low and behold it was the wheel bearings. Replaced the hub assembly on the tire and viola, $1,600 later, the problem is gone!
And now that i don't have bad bearings and a stuck caliper draging on my tire, my trucks a little faster :-)

Thanks for everyone's help!

Am I safe assuming we have been discussing the lifetime sealed bearings? Has anyone removed the hub, then had the problem or is this on factory set?

Well they are sealed bearings, yes. But I wasn't aware they were suppose to be lifetime. The ones that went out on me were the factory ones, are those suppose to be lifetime? I didn't think anything on a vehicle was lifetime anymore, lol.

Jason F,
The reason I asked is because I have 500,000 miles on mine. Never touched em.
Maybe mine lasted because the truck was made in Mexico.
Just kidding.

Do the 2000 year models also have sealed wheel bearings on the front?
