Subject: MPG for 4.7 4X4 quad cab
IP: Logged

Message:
Just wondering what other folks are getting for milage? I'm thinking mine is kind of low, maybe needs a tune-up or something? It's a 2002 quad cab, 4X4 (AWD), BFG All-Terrain's, 4.7l V8, and I'm getting 11-12 MPG in town, 15-16 highway. Does this sound right, or seem low? I seem to remember getting better milage a couple years ago. Please post #'s for comparison. Thanks!!!

My 02 QC 4x4, 4.7, auto, 3.92 gears gets 13-14 MPG in mixed driving and 16-19 MPG on the highway (@70 MPH). The one time I did exclusively city driving I got about 12 MPG. I'm also running Redline synthetic lubricants in the differentials. Last year I was getting about 15 mpg in mixed driving, but then I put on some all-terrain type tires, and lost about 1 MPG.

Truck is stock except for a Fram AirHog Air Filter.
I use cruise every opportunity I can maybe that's the 1 to 2 mpg difference?

2004 Dak QC, 4x4, 4.7, 5spd auto, Leer cap, P245/75R16 Wrangler RTS @ 38 psig, K&N air filter, stock spark plugs, regular gas, about 17,000 miles on it.

I drive mainly highway and country roads, 50 to 75 mph getting 19 to 20 mpg. Occasionally getting 21 mpg.

Last trip driving around the city for a few days, not a big loss, about 18 mpg.

I normally don't hammer the throttle, just often enough to give myself a quick smile! I try to not tailgate or go roaring up to stoplights and hammer the brakes either. Not saying you do, just trying to help.

Oh, and hope you don't run ethanol fuel in your Dak. Heard it is not recommended over 15%, and gives poor mileage at higher amounts.

By experience also, higher octane than 87 usually decreases the mpg - yes decreases it in the 4.7 engines. They are more efficient on 87. Good thing with the prices going up.

Maybe a new set of Champion copper plugs would help your mpg. Regardless of what others say, that is the only plug I would run.

I've got the BGF's pumped up to 35psi, and I got 225's instead of 245's thinking it might help with the mpg (not sure if it made a diffreence or not). Complete tune-up this past summer, but put in Bosch platinum 2's. I drive pretty conservatively most of the time.

I'm not sure what the % ethanol in our gas is here in CA. I do know our gas pretty much sucks. It doesn't even smell like gas anymore... I did try a couple tanks of premium a while ago and so no change in mpg, so just use 87 (low grade).

Where can I find info on the TPS calibration/mod, and will this help milage? I'm also thinking about changing my O2 sensor (is there a preferred source/brand?), and really thinking about getting one of those Superchip(?) programmers (again, is there a preferred source?). Does, or can, re-programming help with the mpg?

I heard the mixed fuel does kill MPG.

I think I get at least 16MPG highway even with the 4.56 gears.

Oh well. I have no recent MPG calculated. I drive a company vehicle for work and only drive the Dak after I get home and of course I gas it quite a bit to put a smile on my face :p

I have an 02 QC AWD 4.7 auto also. I get pretty much the same as you. 12-13 city only, 16-16.5 highway only (75MPH). Combined 14-14.5......

The AWD's don't respond quite the same as the other drivetrains.

I hadn't reset my MPG/odom for years, and it showed 13.8 (my driving is relatively "local"). I reset it about 3 weeks ago and, although my driving is a bit more "highway" as of late, it has crept up to 16.2! Awesome. I'm still considering a move to a Subu Outback or similar. Hey, 10+ mpg is hard to argue with and still have something that get's through the snow and can haul two dogs around. Convince me otherwise!

04 Dakota Quad Cab, 4.7/automatic/4x4. 3.55 rear, 265/70/16s. Off the lot when I bought it beginning of winter 2003 I was averaging 12-13 mpg during the break-in period. Sometimes as low as high 11s if the temps went down and I was only doing short trips. It's now up to an average of high 14s year round. I can get 15 all around if I don't floor it constantly, close to 18 on road trips if I set the cruise at 55 and stay off the gas completely. However with my driving style an average of 14.8 or 14.9 seems the norm.

2003 QC 4.7L 4x4 3.55 gears.

I typically drive 90% highway and 10% city on 60mi round trip to work 5x/week. When new I got high 15's low 16's. Then stealidy mid 17's. For the last 6 weeks or so, no driving habit changes I get mid 18's to mid 19's. I don't know if it's because I hit 50k and it just finally got broke in right or what! I personally suspect it has something to do with the lower standards on fuel production implemented about the same time to enable the oil companies to lower the cost of gas.

I usually see a slight increase in the spring from the winter but I've owned the truck almost 3 years and had NEVER seen over 19MPG until 6 weeks ago and now I have averaged it on 400mi fillups 3 or 4 times.

And yes, I calculate my MPG by hand everytime I fill up. And for those that care usually the computer is pretty close, within 1.5MPG or so at worst and typically within 1.

Dodge is officially present to Poland since just a few days!,with its Caliber. My Dak was imported by me from States .
Fuel price is a "nice story".One liter costs 1,3 USD, so multiply by 3,785 gives 4,92 USD.Like it???.In most european countries it is even more.
In Poland "per capita" income is several times lower than by You,so boys ,do not complain so much.It always might be worse.....

Right Mike its a result of higher fuel taxes, But does all the money go for transportation use? Over here it doesn't.

So your paying almost 5 dollars a gallon?? I your lucky to see a Hummer H3 pass down the road over there in Poland. But what about Luxenberg?? Since all of Europe millions airs live over there, I wonder what the fuel price is if I was to vacation there; lets say 3 nights??
