Subject: oil filter magnets

I just bought an oil filter magnet off eBay. I should get it in a week. They sit on the outside of the oil filter and keep metal particles there, instead of having them flow back through the engine. Transmissions have a magnet in them, it only makes sense to also have one for the engine.

Anyone else using one???

I'm using a home-brew one. It's half of a magnet I
got out of a electric motor some years back, that
just fits around the filter - well half way around.
If you ever cracked open a eletric motor, there is
2 magnet halves that surround the armature.

After 5,000 miles, I cut the filter open, & yeah,
needless to say it worked. Magnet cost $0.

Engines do not need a magnet around the oil filter. The only reason a transmission needs one is because it's fluids are not changed out nearly as often and run in with more moving parts, creating more possible metal contamination. If you change your oil regularly, a good filter will catch all metal particles.

I used a AC/Delco this time around. Yeah, I no it's
a Chevy part, but it does go well with my F*rd fuel

I like the synthetic type or a type that has at least 98% multipass efficiency. I have tried K&N. Those are good. Have great flow and filtration. Those tend to be larger than OEM though, so better check the space before you try to install one. Your idea isn't bad though. I can see why someone would want to install a magnet.

What the magnet does, Chris, is grab the really fine metal particles in your oil (the ones too small for the standard oil filter medium to trap), and hold them to the side of the filter can.
If you try it just, once, and then cut the filter open and see the stuff the magnet catches, I believe you'll be convinced that a filter magnet is a good thing.
A good quality bypass filter with sub-micron filtration would accomplish the same thing, but sub-micron oil filtration on a vehicle is expensive to implement.

I agree the magnet isn't a bad idea. I also think it lies to a person. It catches metal alright but it's doing this prior to the filter itself having a chance to do the job. If your using CHEAP filters the magnet becomes far more importate. cheap filters don't come close to the filtering quality of more expensive filters. I use mobil 1 filters, There best model at 13 bucks a pop. Syn filtering material. These filters are super efficiant leaving little if any value to using a magnet. Even at that. There's no reason not to add a bit more protection that might be benificial.

So mamy problems .... So little time

Shatto please stop. no oil chage or filter change for one year or 25,000 miles using amsoil. Got one better for you.. quite a few years ago, bought a 83 turbo coupe thunderbird. car had 30,000 miles when purchased, being young, careless, or stupid, never changed oil, added oil a few times but never changed. when i sold the car it had 140,000 miles on it. being a turbo car now mind you.Still ran great. Brand of oil used, quaker state, valvoline, wolf head, just what ever was cheapest. POINT BEING, yOU can change your oil at recommended intervals, or not at all using any oil. But will amsoil pay for warranty related repairs when you void your warranty by going 25,000 miles without changing oil???????????????????????

Here's the plan;
Go to www.amsoil.com. and read the guarantee.
Since they are just liars, sue them and retire!

I have a question; since using synthetic filters and by-pass filters and long life synthetic oil is a scam, and we should really change oil at 3,000 miles like the people who sell oil say you should............wait, now I have another question; why believe them?
And, if changing at 3,000 miles is good, wouldn't changing at 1,000 miles be even better?

Don't you think for one minute you could collect a dime from them if there was 20 warrenties on there oil/filters. You would have to be richer then rich to fight them and you'd still run out of mony bwfore they did
It's a matter of practicality ' 5,000 for a new engine or 10's of thousands on a long shot. You do the math.

SHATTO, you missed the point you amsoil whore, auto manufactors set the oil change requirements per their warranty. IM saying, I dont change my oil for 25,000 miles, which will void the autos warranty, and amsoil will pay for any repairs that may occur had I followed the autos guideline?

I'm getting so sick of hearing about f*cking amsoil!!!! It's ok to try and promote business but this is getting STUPID... I agree with "Get Real".. In order for the warrenty to remain valid, oil must be changed at a specific interval...

Oil not changed at that interval = voided warrenty

Voided warrenty = money goes from your pocket to dealership pocket

dealership pockets = VERY VERY deep

I will NOT use amsoil just because I'm sick of hearing about it and It's being beat down our throats.. Yes, you are very "subtle" with the beating-down-the-throat thing but everywhere I turn it's amsoil this or that.. I have 261K on my 92 Dakota and never had a problem using whatever brand I came across at the gas station...

Here is the logical answer to what you just said;
You and others modify your vehicle and improve performance over what the factory engineers designed. Why? Money to burn? Quest for performance? Keep up with the Jonses?

They could, but don't sell vehicles with far higher performance than they do. Why? Room for improvment? Cut production costs (a penny a million times gets to be real money)? Designing to the driving habits of the largest group?

Do manufacturers want oil changed at 3,000 miles?
Why does GM have a system that has the vehicle tell the driver when it is time to change oil?

Why have manufacturers have 100,000 mile "Tune-Up's?"

Manufacturers build to far higher standards than only a decade ago. (Your father believed a car was worn out at 100,000 miles. You expect it to run, pretty much flawlessly that far.)
Why? If you are happy, you might buy another of their product. Look around. Highways and by-ways are full of vehicles with mileage on them, unattainable not too long ago.

If Amsoil is as bad as you indicate, why has "Big Oil" finally followed their lead and begun producing their own synthetic oils?

If I did become loyal to a brand, it'd be Royal Purple or something... This is about oil filter magnets... Does Amsoil make one of those too? Geez! I wouldnt buy it if Amsoil was the only one who made it!!!!! I vote amsoil off the island...

My grandfather used them 70 years ago.

He also used straight 30 weight oil. Changed it religously every 3,000 miles.

Your grandfather was pushing it hard. Untill the 60's you changed oil every 1500 miles . By the time most cars hit 50'000 miles, they was starting to have blow by ( Draft tube only ). Engines stsrted living long lifes when PCV valves came into existance.Prior to PCV oil filters and oil left a lot to desire. Sludge was a given

So many problems .... So little time

I asked this on one threade but will ask it again here. Who says the oil is changed every 3k miles? Have you read your owners manual?

My wifes 01 grand am has an oil life cycle system. This is a factory component. The owners manual says to change oil every time the light comes on OR at 1 year. So, this means amsoil is by far not the first company to offer a 1 year oil change interval. This one is COVERED under warranty!!

My 02 dakota quad cab has 7500 miles listed as the standard interval.

I ask, who says 3000 miles is the right interval? I've checked at a few local shops and they all have 5,000 as the standard interval. Do I use these shops? No! I've been in looking for parts, tires, whatever and read their posted signs, prices, etc.

read your warranty (or extended warranty) coverage. Any regular maintenance item that is done OUTSIDE factory recommended intervals voids your warranty coverage. If you don't change your oil for 25k miles and break something internal, the dealer finds out you run oil for 25k, they will void your warranty. Nothing you can do about it! It's written in the contract! Take that up with amsoil to pay for that repair and all future repairs that would normally be covered under your warranty that is now defunct.

I run mobil 1 synthetic in both my dakota and my wife's grand am. I change it every 3000-5000 miles depending on driving conditions. Why 3,000 miles when the factory is 7500? First, it says to change more often when driven under severe driving conditions like stop-and-go or towing. I've been doing alot of bass/trout fishing in a wma area. pond for bass is 10 miles drive in at speeds under 15 mph (average is around 5-8). It's gravel, dirt, sand, mud, large holes (love the skid plates!!). I've come to really understand the importance and value of gearing in transmissions for vehicles that are designed for off-road use. Besides this, I work in atlanta, I run into stop-and-go traffic even working 5a-2pm! And the air quality in atlanta was ranked 9th worst.

As you can image I change my air filters before the recommended interval as well.

All cheap insurance compared to the potential loss of a good warranty that I paid for!


Don't worry obio3, we're all getting old. We just won't be as old as you at the same time :)
