So far I like my 2001 Dodge Dakota, but it has a mild rear end whine that started at 42,000 miles, since I bought this truck second hand with 39K. I don't know if the rear end lube was ever changed. So I had grease monkey chage it with sythetic axel lube and their limited slip additive....still whined, so I added some BG limited slip additive...still a mild whine at 50 to 65mph, when under load, If I let up on the gas slightly the whine goes away..So I Went to the Dodge dealer and got factory axel Lube and 2 bottles of limited slip additive...still the same whine. I noted the 2 week old grease monkey lube that I sucked out, was really dirty! Is this what I should expect with only 250 miles on new axel lube? Could this be a sign of excessive wear and a early failure? I hope this truck dosen't let me down.....Since I am new to the Dodge world, I hope I am in for a pleasant experience.

Did the mechanic remove the rear end cover to completely drain the fluid? If not, you had some dirty fluid left.

The machanic did not remove the diff. cover.. ya I bet you are wright....I also did not remove the cover...but the lube got changed twice in the process of troubleshooting the rear end whine...so I should be ok til next 12k service? ...I will remove the cover....should I be concerned of a pending rear end failure, under normal light towing conditions (2000lb boat and trailer....or too hard to guess! Thanks

Update...I have driven 50 miles since replacing the lube in my rear axel with the factory rear lube, and 2 bottles of factory limited slip additive...The whine was less notable today and occurs 10 mph sooner @45 mph, then goes away above 45mph...its hardly noticable now...maybe it will get better. I believe a slight amount of whine in a 4X4 rear axel with low gears is what you should expect?

I have a 1999 dakota 4x4 5.2L and my rear whines. It only whines giving it gas but letting off, it goes away. I took the gears out and looked at the race for the inner pinion bearing and it was pitted badly. That was the cause of my rear end noise but I put it back together with new bearings and races and it still makes noise but not constant at one speed. By the way, how do you properly set the carrier bearing races? There are 2 adjustable "things" that you can turn to get the races tight against the bearings but is there a tool to do it with and how tight do the races have to be against the bearings? please email me with answers. thank you

I have a '99 dakota. with problems.....
but i did solve the rear end noise riddle.
pinion bearings shred themselves probably due to lubrication break-down. 104000 mi. mostly hi-way miles. also carrier bearings and axle bearings were getting worn. i replaced every bearing and seal in the rear end, and noise is non-existent. my speed sensor in the pumpkin also crapped out from all the accumulated debris. to confirm this diagnosis, run yer truck in 3rd or 4th gear with the cover off, and ring gear removed. if the pinionn bearing is at fault, she'll howl like a banshee. p.s. beware setting your pinion nut to torque specs. dealer told me 210 ft. lbs. and it was loose!! i had to adjust torque by shaft endplay with a dial indicator. goold luck man, sorry if i'm too late with this message, but pass on the info.

Let me get this straight. Your rear end has a nose? Does it smile too?

I would love to bolt an 8 3/4 in mine. Then find a way to change the front over to the 5 lug 4 1/2 bolt pattern. That would end 2 problems. 1-getting a rear you can sevice yourself, and being able to buy the wheels I want, not the wheels centerline-weld-american racing think I want. If I wanted a honda I would have bought one.

I have a 2000 4.7 V8 dodge Dakota and recently it started making a clicking noise somewhere in the rear end when I am accelerating, and it stops after I hit about 20 mph, and then once i get going to about 40 mph something starts to vibrate, until i get off the gas....

I was wondering if anyone else has had this problem and if you know what possibly could be wrong, I might take a trip to the dealer to find out what it is so i just wanted some possible problems it could be?

Thanks a lot

I have an 01 Dakota Quad cab sport that from day one the rear end whinned at normal speeds starting at 35 mph and progressivly gets worse at higher speeds. The rear end was rebuilt at 36,000 mi and 100,000 miles. With 121,000 the shop recomends a new rear end complete be installed.
