Subject: 4x4 hubs
IP: Logged

Message:
I have a '93 with a 3.9 and a 5spd. It appears to me that the front hubs are always engaged-the front CV axles, differential, and driveline are always turning (being pushed) even in 2wd, and I'm sure that this is costing me fuel mileage. Can someone please tell me if anyone makes lockout hubs for this application, I have not been able to find any, or if there is some kind of conversion I can do to help me with this, any other tips on fuel mileage would also be helpfull, thank you.

yank the front axle out of a 97-91 i think dakota, there was a CAD system on those axles

Get a mess of $X$ magazines. I mean 4X4, but that does seem appropriate.
I seem to recall it can be done but you end up replacing transfer cases and a lot of other expensive stuff.
Technology trade off.

I was told the new Dodge 4X4 has automaticly disconnecting hubs. If so, perfect.
You might drop by the dealer and see if there is anything you can do with the new technology.
Or you might save the money to buy gas...

Why is it is important to disconnect the front running gear?
Long ago, in Ethiopia, where we used four wheel drive a lot for serious reasons, (no offense, snow drivers) I had to overhaul the front axle of our first Land Rover because bearings wore out, around 100,000km.
The point? I figure we only used the front axle 15% of the time.
Installing WARN hubs cured that problem and improved mileage significantly.

Nothing new about automatic hubs. I had a set on a 88 Dodge raider. Also had a set of warn automatics on a 64 CJ5 that I put a V8 in. The raider hubs was junk. They could/would jump out on hard spins, then reengage with forosity. The warns were fantastic. They could also be put in full time like a standard warn hub. Bad thing was if you got stuck, you had to turn them in cause they wouldn't engage in reverse. These were the best, toughest hubs I ever owned but also were pricey

and i cant imagine it would effect your mileage that much that spending the time/money would actualy make you come out ahead

Well, the way I see it rotating mass costs horsepower. Also there is no sense in puting wear and tear on all those moving parts when there is no need for them to bo moving, I plan on having this truck for a long time and I think the initial cost now would be well worth it in the long run. Somebody up there said that no one makes hubs for dakotas and so far they are right, I cannot find any for my application. Is it possible the set for the Ram would fit?

jsut tapered roller bearings and those hardly ever go bad

I was wondering if the AFTERMARKET LOCKOUT hubs for the ram would also fit the dakota.

Besides the bearings there are also the CV joints, the U joints on the front drive line, the front axle seals, the front output transfer case seal along with the bearing there, and also all of the front differential gears and internal bearings = that is a bit of things to wear out if I dont do anything to remedy all of that stuff turning, which has no purpose turning anyway in 2 wheel drive!

The Ram 1500 also utilized a CAD system up to 2001. Starting in 2002 they too went IFS and spin the front shaft in 2wd. The 2500/3500 still have the CAD. While Dynatrac offers a manual hub conversion kit for the late model 2500/3500 Rams:

1. it's very expensive, it'll cost you more to convert it than you'll ever save with it

2. Late model Ram 2500/3500 use AAM solid axles, a completely different configuration.

That's right, my bad, for some reason I was thinking the 3/4 and 1 ton AAM axles still used the CAD setup. They don't, they're live axles also.

In any event, the manual hub conversion kit for them still won't work on a Dakota, it's an entirely different setup.
