well mine finally went out this morning. i was on the way to work and i notice a misty steam coming out of the a/c vents. when i turned on the fan a huge cloud of fog came out of the system. i had to roll down the windows to be able to breathe. luckily when it went out, no water drained into the interior, just under the truck. once the motor cooled a little, i pulled the hoses off and bypassed the heater core completely. i got a price of $60.99 for a new one from advance auto parts. i am not in a big hurry to fix it since the weather here in northeast georgia mountains is almost perfect right now. i was wandering how much of a pain it was to rip apart the dash to replace the heater core. if anyone has any tips/tricks or suggestions, i could use them. i have had to replace a heater core on my old jeep cj7 before, but i did not have to rip apart the dash to do so. any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. thanks guys.

Make a list of where everything goes. Leftover parts is a bummer.

I had mine done at the dealership by a mechanic freind. I thought it would take me way too long. He actually had "swung" the dash out of the way. Had the steering column dropped. Not sure how he did it but it was pretty cool seeing the whole dash moved out of the way like that. He ended up spending over 6 hours on it. He would put the dash back and the vents would not switch to JUST floor. Maybe i should have told him it was doing that a long time;) Works great now!!!!

I just had the heater core replaced on my 02 QC. It's a major PITA. The whole dashboard must be removed and the AC system evacuated (if you have AC). It's about 6 hrs in labor.

yeah it is a PITA, but you can do it its just time consuming. Doing it yourself will save you a ton of money because on our gen 3s it calls for 13 hours of labor. First you evacuate the a/c. then you pull the A-pillar trim off, remove the bolts on the top of the dash, drop the steering column, disconect some of the wiring harnesses and vaccuum lines for the climate control box. Then on the bottom of the dash there are two large bolts (one on each side) by the kick pannels and you loosen them. The whole dash will rotate down on those bolts. Then you can wrestle the a/c and heater box out after disconnecting the hoses unbolting it from inside the truck and under the hood on the firewall.
Then you take apart that box carefully and pull the core out. If i were you I would change a/c evaportor at the same times because you do not want to do this job twice. hope this helps because this is all i can remember off the top of my head.
