Subject: Intake Manifold Gasket

I have a question...Why does the intake manifold gasket "blow" in the 5.2's and other V6 & V8 Dodge motors?

Is it because the gasket is too thin or the plate on the bottom of the intake is too thin and warps when it gets hot?

Anyone have any ideas?

I was under the impression that the belly pan is steel and the intake is aluminum. The different materials expand and contract with the heat at different rates. That's why hughes makes that aluminum belly pan gasket. This is just what I've heard.

that is correct what last person said. they do come apart alot. i just put a turbo on my 5.2 ram and turned boost up and it ran really good at about 9psi for a couple miles then now all i can get is about 3psi. so i have ordered the plate and going to install it this weekend.

the plate is only $85 and comes w/ gasket.
it also is thick enough and doesnt heatup from engine oil as much as stock plate.

I'm surprised you're replacing the belly pan in a turbo truck, why not go with the one-piece Mopar M1 2bbl or 4bbl intake manifold instead? It would flow a lot better with that turbo system.

yeah rammer if you have a turbo, you should really get the M1 rather than risk blowing the gasket agian. Boost+Oil=No engine soon. If you do decide to stick with the stock manifold, atleast have someone weld that new aluminum plate in place instead of just bolting it.

i was told the m-1 intakes are only good for about 4000rpm and up. the runners are really short and i will have no bottom end. last time i had the intake off for my cam swap i ported the intake. the same as hughes engines does. they have alot of facts about the best intakes for these motors. they saythat the gasket wont blow out. i talked to the owned "david hughes" and they have tested these plates up to 20psi w/out problems.

when i ported my intake and t-body (befor turbo) i gained almost half second in 1/4 mile.

i forgot the thing from hughes is not an alum. gasket it is an 1/4 thick plate that goes in place of thre stock plate that is about 30gauge sheet metal. so it wont flex.

to let people know i have some parts for sale:
superchips programer, 5.2 &5.9 shorty headers,1.7 ratio (factory style)mopar perf. rockers.,25%under drive pulley and belt also.
