I am considering swapping my manual 5-speed tranny fromm my 2000 4wd Dakota to an automatic tranny. Can anyone give me the drawbacks and / or at least a little insight as to what all will need to be chaged. Any help that anyone could give would be greatly appreciated.

By the way the engine is a 3.9L. I forgot to add that to my first posting.

First thing I would do is call the dealership or a transmission shop and ask if the computer can handle it; or if it'll need to be re-flashed or replaced.

Well, maybe that is second. I'd have a serious talk with myself and make a pro and con list, to see if it would be worth the cost and effort.

If I actually did serious off road driving, I might test drive an automatic. The difference could be dramatic.

Your a first! Most go from Auto to Manual.

1. You will need the PCM re-flashed. People who go from
auto to manual & don't touch the PCM get an idiot
light cause there is no auto tranny plugged in.

2. Your MPG will drop like 1-3 MPG.

3. You will need the column shifter for the auto among
other hardware & linkage.

4. driveshaft length may need to change. Double check.

5. Have to install the tranny cooler & new radiator
that has tranny cooler built in. Not sure with the 3.9L

I agree with shatto - I would have a long talk with myself.

Are you ready to change the entire steering column? Re-wiring the column? Re-attaching steering linkage? What if the drivesaft size is different? Mounting the same?

I would have to say...Bad idea. Your not going to have a good time!

Not to put more salt on the wound ... but IMO, the
only plus for me having an auto is cruise control.

BTW, where do you live, JB? I'm looking to ditch
the auto on my 99 5.2L 4x4 CC, & would love a manual.
You wanna swap drivetrains? What kind of tranny you
have?

Thank you guys for the replies and the concerns. But I already have a 00 wrecked Dak. with all of the hardware. I am basicly looking for insight into the problems that could arise that I might not have thought of. I also know my fuel mileage will go down but I live only 5 miles from work so this is not a huge concern since that is really the only place I drive it. The auto is basicly just for the towing of a boat and other equipment that is very hard on a manual.

Since you are doing it, be sure to get the heavy duty radiator, and you might as well add a transmission cooler somewhere under the bed.
Finish off with Amsoil ATF.
Remember 10 miles a day is harder than a good long tow.
Why not contact Steve and get the engine by-pass filter too. Get all around protection.
