I own a 98 dakota, 3.9 with 84,000 mi. on it. The a.c. stopped blowing cold air so I figured it was low on refrigerant. I charged the system, but still no cold air. The compressor seems to be working ok as it cycles on & off. I brought the truck into Pep boys & they told me system was low & that the comp. was shot because it was leaking. I thought that if the system was low on refrigerant the compressor would not engage. They hit me with an estimate for $820.00 for a new compressor, labor & belt. I politely declined their offer. I'm wondering if something else could be wrong besides the compressor?

Well if its low on refrig. it will engage but disengage soon after b/c its too low on refrig and will shoot warm air. It will keep on doing this probably cycling on and off quite a few times per minute. If you set everything on the a/c to max and checked it the compressor should stay engaged the whole time.

The best way to check refrig. level is to buy a gauge which you can get at pepboys or an auto place and hook it up and check it that way and then add refrig as needed.

Yes, NEVER randomly add refrigerant! Always use a gauge set and troubleshoot it in a logical manner. Go to www.aircondition.com to learn more.
