Subject: What recourse do I have???????
IP: Logged

Message:
Ok, just had my new wheels installed last week, drove her home and the brakes vibrated like crazy while braking. Today, I checked the tourque on my lugnuts and my tourque wrench only goes to 150...all of the nuts over 150. Obviously they tourqued them down too tight and have warped my rotors. I'm going to bitch to them tomorrow but are my rotors wrecked? If so, what can I make them do about it if anything?

Thanks...

ps...4wheel Parts installed these...they should know this s**t!

Try to torque them correct first to see if that doesn't solve the problem. But then you can leave them as they set them with this same explaination. Be interesting to see how they handle this.

So many problems .... So little time

Dont loosen them. bring it back how it is and tell them. If the rotors are warped and you loosen the lugs, they will say it was like that before you brought it in.

so I called them yesterday and this guy says to me..."i've been a mechanic for 10 years and have never heard of that." Bunch of sh*t...these are the same idiots that are installing lift kits and welding stuff...and they can't even get mounting a set of wheels right.

Take it back over there and tell the manager the problem. Just be straight with him and ask him how the lugs were torqued, if he says with a torque wrench. Then ask him why they are torqued to 150lbs plus and hand him the wrench and tell him to check it.Then tell him whatever they did it made the brake pedal pulse and what causes that is warped rotors and what can cause a warped rotor are lug nuts hammered down with an impact wrench. If that don't work then get a hold of the home office and try that. I don't know very many mechanics that admit wrong doing. Did they tell you to retighten the lug nuts after 25 miles?
What was the 4-wheel parts location?
goodluck.

Woodrow's right. Don't be a jerk. Don't touch anything. Take it back, explain your concerns, and have them check the rotors with a dial indicater. As long as you're not an A-hole about it, things can usually be worked out. If not, walk away and chalk it up to experiance.

Years ago I worked at a tire store (Oregon Tire) and one guy that worked there would always tighten the lugs on so tight with air wrench that when you would go to torque the lugs with torque wrench, they wouldn't even move at all, torque wrench would just click as soon as you started to tighten lugs! We had a lot of unhappy customers returning with warped rotors, not to mention the people returning with broken studs when they had to change a flat or take a wheel off for any reason. It made it real interesting if the customer had locking lug nuts, it was a real pleasure attempting to take those off with the 'key' if they were over torqued! The manager would always turn the rotors, and/or replace studs for the customer at no charge.
I agree with everbody else, don't mess with them, bring it back to shop as is so that they can see how over torqued they are. Also, as stated in above posts, deal with the manager and don't get too pi$$ed or cop an attitude and they will probably take care of your problem. If they give you a hard time about it, then you can cop an attitude and let them know that you will never do business with them again and will tell all your friends and family not to patronize thier place of business.
Good luck!

Yep, I once told a service manager

"You know, word of mouth is a very strong advertising tool....its also a good way to let as many people as you can know about how a business treats its customers....AND I LOVE TO TALK!"

Guess what kind of corrective service I got and what kind of repeat service I get? I still go there to this day and still deal with the same "nice as ever" service manager.

Hey, thanks for the replies. I definately was polite about it but right off the bat the guy on the phone was a jackass. It's the 4 wheel parts store in Salt Lake City...especially here in Utah where everyone 'wheels they gotta know how to tourque down the nuts. A guy my brother works with has a Ram and after some service, he checked the tourque on the lug nuts. They were OVER 200lbs...he took it back the next day and the owner of the dealership happened to be standing there with the service manager. He took the tire iron that comes with the truck, handed it to the owner and asked him to try and loosen ONE nut...couldn't do it. He said, "what if i had a flat on the side of the road...do you think i could get these tires off?" This guy was a big guy too...anyways, i'm going down sometime this week hopefully to get it resolved.

Wheel nut torque is 100lb/ft. I do mine in stages in a cross pattern with the wheel off the ground. I use a chock of some sort to keep the wheel from spinning while applying torque: all to 50, then all to 85, then all to 100, and repeat for the other wheels. Yeah, it takes a couple more minutes, big deal, but I have never had this "warp" problem using this system.
Major thing is to make absolutely sure the mating surfaces of hub and wheel are clean and free of any debris, and do the rear ones with the parking brake OFF.

hope everything works out. but they can say beings the vehicle was out of their sight. they can say you did something to try and get free set of rotors out of them. dont know why they use air wenches. I ran in to a prob with my ranger. had to get a half drive breaker bar out and stand on it to brake them loose. thats one funny thing I saw at wally world tire and lube. even though they have some of the worse maint. I did see them use a tourqe wrench to put the lugs back on the rims. so if wally world can do it why cant more tire places do the same.
