Subject: Leaking Oil
IP: Logged

Message:
Just curious... I Have a 96 dakota SLT 5.2L AT 4x4. I have noticed that I am starting to leak oil out the back side of the engine. I cannot really tell where the oil is comming from and I am hoping its not the rear main leaking oil. One thing that I have noticed is that after I park it, it only leaks for a short time then stops and apparently that is the only time it leaks because I have gone quite a while with it leaking and it has only gone down a half a quart. Could anybody tell me where this oil might be comming from?

Two things to check at the least before going off the deep end. First and most likely is the oil pressure sending unit located at back or engine close to the distributer. Next would be a valve cover gasket. most likely your leak is in this area

So many problems .... So little time

In my experience the sending unit has leaked most when at park almost exactly as you mention. An odd ball sort of way to fix it, at least with mine, is to use synthetic motor. Using regular motor oil it tends to degrade faster and loses its thickness thus allowing it to leak more than usual. I have replaced it once so far ( sending unit ) and second one is leaking or starting to leak. think is has to do with engine pressures not being omitted through EGR valve or PCV valve... not sure. Either way, sending unit is usually right behind the throttle body on the passenger side. That where it was/is on mine.
