Subject: Weak A/C?

I have a 98 Dakota and the air conditioning doesn't seem to be very strong. How does that year's AC work? Does it have to be recharged?

Your a/c system is probably out of freon. go to a shop and get them to pressure test your a/c system with nitrogen. they will probably find a hose with a pin hole leak. to find it they spray soapy water on the pressureized hoses and the soap bubbles. Get the problem fixed and then recharge the a/c system. If there isn't any problems with the hoses, it could be the pressure switches, a/c clutch, plugged condensor, plugged evaporator, plugged expansion valve. so you should take it to a shop and get it properly diagnosed

Is it your A/C or your fan? See if the fan works on high only. If it does, it is your blower motor resistor, very cheap to fix.

I'm pretty sure it's the AC. Fan seems to work fine. I had it on full blast, and it gets cool, but not nearly as cold as it should.

you can pick up a can of R-134a to top off the system and it may help depending how low it is. but this may be just a temporary fix. sounds like you have a slow leak somewhere in the system.

i topped off the a/c in my wifes mazda 2 yrs ago with one can and it is still blowing ice cold. i guess i got lucky on that one.

I had the same problem...added 2 cans of refrigerant trying to fix it. I got ice cold air now...but my damn compressor cycles every few seconds and it's not a real soothing sound. I've decided that I'm just gonna buy a non a/c belt and prolly remove the entire a/c system...as you can see, I don't intend to resell this truck and expect to make a ton on it. Gonna run it til the wheels fall off...and yeah Dan, I'll be replacing the ball joints so it doesn't happen sooner than it should. =P

Mr. If a little is good, more MUST be better here,
I added 2 or was it 4 cans of Freon to my 240DL once. Took it to a pro to find why it was knocking. He opened the valve and had a smoke break, came back and waited a while, then hooked up his gear... Moral: too much can break expensive parts.

The air at the vent should be 34 degrees. they can make it colder but you'll risk ice-up. My 1998 system can mantain 20 degrees under the outside, lower on a long run. Regular cab.
