Shredded a rear speed sensor. When I removed the rear cover I found the reason. A small piece of metal. About a 3/4" half circle 5/8" long and about 1/16" thick. Looks like half of a bearing race. Only found the 1 piece. Any ideas where it came from?

Probably just exactly what you think it is. Time for a differential rebuild.

Might be a piece of one of the clips that holds the clutch pack together in your diff. Show the piece to the local service guys and they can confirm.

The clips that hold your axle in are about that size. Put your truck up on axle stands and make sure emergency break is off and give your rear wheels a tug. If it comes out then the that is where the clip is from.

does it look like this ?

copy/paste links in address bar

last two pictures not from my truck but shows where clip goes
(2 per side, total of 4 in axle) and possible damage it can do.

if your truck has a factory limited slip axle it's probably a broken clutchpack clip,
pretty common failure in 9 1/4" axles, broke one in my 2004 Ram 1500,
no signs of problem until I replaced rear axle fluid at 12000 miles,
found a clip and lots of metal shavings in the oil..
dealer replaced complete carrier and LSD on warranty.

i still think it came from his momma's buttcrack.. I've worked with the Dodge Dealership for 50+ years and this is the most common cause of metal in differential
