Wrecked my 2003 Dak today.
Nice way to end the week.
Sittin at an intersection, look left, look right
look left, go. Next thing I hear is rubber and then smack. 2003 HD Fat Boy nails me broadside.
Never even saw him. He's Ok scrubed lots of speed locking up.
It really upsets me because I ride too!
Thankfully he's OK.
Trucks got two doors and tail light needs fixin.
HD needs a little more.
Thanks for insurance.
Vent over. I feel better now. Not.

It sometimes happens. I was turning left one time and looked twice as you did and turned and found myself rubbing sides with another car. Can't understand why I didn't see it. Motorcycles tend to blend in with other vehicles sometimes and their one headlight can blend in with a car's two lights. But this was a car in broad daylight. You do have a blind spot in your eye where the optic nerve joins in at the back of the retina. Your brain fills it in so you don't see this spot in your field of vision, but sometimes you wonder if something you didn't see was in this particular spot and your brain just filled in the background and left that one detail out.

Jerry,

I just wanted to say that I had read a book on this sort of thing and now that you mention it I didnt even consider the import of it when driving a car. That is actually a scary thought if you aren't paying enough attention. Like you said, your brain just fills in the dots if you aren't that too tune in to whats going on around you. Its really quite weird. =:0

Here check this out. This isn't as purposeful as I had hoped or read when reading the diagram in the book but this give you the idea in a nut shell what it was trying to portray. You simply see a situation similar to previous experience and then your brain/expectations fill in the rest for you. Doesn't matter if its 'real' or not, your brain considers the detail for you even if its real or not. Kinda a fluke of nature I suppose. Heres a picture that plays with the nature of expectations...

You end up looking at the two men on the bottom as if they are looking up, and the two men on the top as looking down. But image in reality is really one dimensional. Just a little taste of the false work of the brain some times. hehe.

This kind of thing doesn't 'just happen'. This kind of thing is a DIRECT RESULT of careless driving. Don't make excuses. ILLUSIONS!!!!! Give me a friggin' break!!!! Pay attention!!!! If you rationalize this sort of thing as 'just a fluke', you're bound to keep repeating these lousy driving habits until you're the only one left on the road. Learn from your mistakes. And, for cryin' out loud, don't kill anyone!!!!!! I think the original poster gets this .... why in the hell is everyone rationalizing it???? To make him feel better??? He shouldn't feel better ... and he knows it!!! I can't wait to get my bike out this weekend. :o)

Eric,

Nothing personal, man. I think you took my posts as excuses. Well, however you see fit. :-)
Nothing surprises me. If I was on a bike too I wouldn't want to read about some dude getting nailed. Regardless, there are careless drivers out there and it is a risk. If someone doesn't want to take responsibility for nailing a motorist than so be it. Still doesn't make it any less safe driving a armored car. I think if its your time, its your time no matter what the circumstances.

Best of Luck,
-Matt

I understand Matt. This kinda thing just strikes a nerve with me. A few years back I got nailed big in a parking lot and, after we exchanged insurance information, he just had to use the phrase "hey, accidents happen ya know". It took everything I had not to rip his friggin' head off. Instead, I called the cops to 'get a report'. Turns out, he had an exorbitant amount of illegal drugs in the car (supposedly his girlfriend's). Very nice.

Accidents are events that CANNOT be avoided. If someone hits someone else with their vehicle, THAT is not an accident. Someone wasn't paying attention.

I wonder if "neversawhim" ever looked at the possibility that the bike was moving to fast towards the intersection, slowed down right before he got into it and hit him versus the other way around? I ride but I do know that quite a few riders push the limit.

Lightening hits a tree and the branch falls on your car. THAT'S AN ACCIDENT or an act of God if you aren't an atheist.

Sometimes rationalizing can cause more concern than needed. Accept it for what it is; someone screwed up and a wreck occured. Thankfully, both parties were allright.

That A-pillar on the Dakota blocks a lot of vision on either side of the windshield. Once I missed seeing a whole car because of it.

The left B-pillar on my Durango and QC block alot of visibility also. I have "lost" plenty of cars there. These two things are about the only negatives I have about my trucks. Just gotta be real careful and not be in a hurry...

What's your left foot doing?

Yeah, vis on the Dakota really is not the greatest; just one of those things you need to get used to and comfortable with. Ever drive a PT Cruiser? THAT is terrible visibility.

Try backing out of a driveway onto a busy road with a 95 Camaro...I don't own one but my friend does. It's almost a guessing game to figure out if a car's coming...back out a few inches, if you hear tires screeching and a horn, someone's coming.

My parents own one....lol. Backing up is not really an option, yes. Then add the awkwardness of the power steering. Then add the moms driving it as a daily driver. Ahh! Maybe I should give her the Dakota instead. :-)

Hehe. Some people drive strictly by balls, I agree. What about some of the pedestrians these days. I lurk past people not enough paying attention to the motorist around them. Some even on cell-phones as they cross the street. It less of a guessing game with thoes dudes, its more like 'whos boss.' You could be driving a 15-20MPH and they will drop off the sidewalk right in front of you, risk life and limb cause what are the odds the driver of this car is crazy, or has had a bad day. I am a PEDESTRAIN. I have the Right-of-Way. If they hit me its their fault. LOL!!!!

Dude, if you asked me, some of those pedestrains ARE crazy.... No joke. :-|
