Subject: Skunk sets off P0456
IP: Logged

Message:
The other morning I was heading for work and I
hit what was left of a skunk. The smell in the cab
was enough to make you wish you would have missed
it and less than 15 seconds later my check engine
light came on.

When I got to work I got the error code off the
truck and it was P0456 (Evap Leak Monitor......).

When I got back home after work I reset the
computer. This morning I made a short trip and
no check engine light has returned.

Question; Can error code P0456 be set by what
happened to me or might I really have a small
leak in the evaporative system?

If I'm thinking twords the right direction, what
*might* have happened was, the evaporative
system may have purged itself right at the momet
I ran over the skunk and it picked up the smell.
Might I be even close to be right on that?

Thanks for any input guys...

You never told us what year or model. There is a evap line running from the gas tank to a charcole canister for the evap system ... and a line from there to the engine.. the skunk might have hit one of the lines under the truck and cause a small leak in the evap system....

Sorry for not listing the year.. It's a 02 4X4
V8 Auto...

I never hit the skunk at all. Just it's guts all
over the road. It was very hard to miss and no
large body parts were picked up, just gut slime
and its smell.

Could have been his little skunky hand was tossed up onto your Evap lines and in an act of revenge for the person who ran him over, his hand tore them all loose...

Either that or maybe the gas cap is loose or you have someother unrelated leak in the evap system.

I popped up this code and the stealership replaced a few things, then the leak detection pump. Nice,,, the part that detects the leaks was defective...

It could be that it is possible the smell set it off. Ammonia is used as a refrigerant and smells a little like a skunk. Could be R134 is similar .If the code reset I would not worry about it.

The code refers to the fuel system. There is no R134 in the fuel system, that's a refrigerant...

As Forseti said, I would check the hoses going to the charcoal canister under the truck. It's located under the truck just a little back from the drivers seat. The hoses have no hose clamps or anything, so will come off easily. Check to see that they are attached well, maybe even cut a little off the end of each hose and reattach to charcoal canister.
I had a code P0455 last week, and after doing the above (plus putting hose clamps on the hoses) and replacing gas cap then resetting computer, and after driving about 400 miles have had no codes since.
Have you checked for codes since resetting the computer?
Hope this helps, good luck!
