I have an 02 Dakota, 4.7L. Can anyone tell me if the rear main seal is one or two piece? I've seen both as replacement parts for the truck. Mine may be leaking. Could also be the oil sending unit that is back there. Can't stand oil leaks.

Looks like nobody is going to jump in on this one so I'll donate a bit. To start with I have never changed a seal on one ov these engines. The information I have indicates you have a one piece seal. It indicates a special tool to remove the old seal plus another special tool to install the new one. I assume these tools come as a set. Most likely there fairly simple and inexpensive. When you install the new seal, it is inparative you get it in exactly correct and perfectly flush with the block. To do the job requires removing the transmission and Flywheel plate. Think I would be darn sure this was the leak before digging in.

So many problems .... So little time

Thanks for the info. You are right, make darn sure before tearing things apart. If it didn't bother me so much to have my truck less than perfect I just live with the leak. I've also read in these forums that the oil pressure sending unit is in the same area. It sometimes starts leaking an looks like a main seal leak. It's a lot easier to replace so that's the first place I'll look.

Larry.......... Your information is correct. Oil pressure sending unit is back in the distributer area. Also it's possible to be a valve cover but I would rather thing sending unit. Good luck

For a variety of reason, just about any small oil leak ends up on the front of the block plate. Rear main, valve covers, oil sender, etc. The big trick is really finding the source of the leak and taking care of it.

Napa will sell you a small bottle of flourescine dye for the oil. Clean the engine really good and let it dry before running it (this is important). Add the dye and run the engine for just a few minutes. In a dark garage use a black light to find the leaking oil. Use a mirror to look at every joint, seam, and seal. If you don't spot anything, open the garage and run the engine for a couple more minutes. Repeat as necessary.

If you run the engine too long, the dye will be everywhere - just like the oil is - and you can't spot the exact source.
