Subject: Strange Brake Question
IP: Logged

Message:
I have a 2004 dakota sxt. I've worked on the front discs to the nth degree. I have drums in the back. Whenever I go to stop, if i push the brake pedal lightly or softly, everything is fine. However, there seems to be a "sweet spot" and it's the spot that I would like to brake the most where the brakes squeel like crazy when you have the pedal pushed this far. If you let up on the pressure or push the pedal a little harder, it stops. The squeeling is ear peircing. Could it be from the drums? what causes this?

might have a rock or something in between your rotor and pad.I know on my 03 I get the same sound time from time. and just thought it was a rock in the pad I picked up. also how much of the pads are left? you might need new pads but I cant see it how its a 04. also peopel talk about the guide pins on the calipers could need greasing.

new brake pads and new rotors. I've taken them off twice since i put them on, cleaned them, greased them, etc. Just when ever I apply a certain amount of pressure, they squeel terribly. Doesn't matter if i'm going 100 or 10. Could it be the drums? haven't done any work on them

well only way to find out is to take the rear tire off and remove your drums and look in there. could be something in there or the pads worn. I thought all 04 came with 4 wheel disk brakes like the 03?

its your brake pads.... if you put a set of cheap pads on your gonna get a squeal that will drive ya nuts.... you do also wanna make sure that your rear brakes are cleaned and free of high dust deposits.... best thing to do is clean your rear brakes with water and soap mixed together then get a couple cans of brake clean to use to repel any water off your rear shoes... it'll dry up quick... use a good set high brand set of pads like raybestos quiet stops or someting in good high quality and make sure your rotors have good fresh smooth surface clean of oils and grease..
