Subject: Changing filter on 4.7
IP: Logged

Message:
Everytime I change oil and filter on my 02 4X4
with 4.7 I always cuss out the engineer that
came up with the idea of the stupid little hand
hole to get at the oil filter.

Has anyone seen a better way? Someone come up
with a mod for the state of the air plastic junk
covering?

It's not that you can't get the filter off and on
again. It's the mess you gotta put up with every
time you remove the filter. You better lay a
bunch of rags in the area of the filter or you're
in for lot of clean up.

Just wondering guys... Any suggestions?

Cut up a 2-liter bottle. Works great! I was the same way as you till I got that idea.

Loosen the filter with a wrench or whatever, then slip the bottle over and remove the filter. Keep it there for a little bit till it stops draining.

All done... :)

If you think changing the oil filterin your Dakota is rediculious. Then try changing your battery in a Dodge Intrepid.

You can also change it easily through the left wheel well; I rotate my tires at the same time.

Lead, follow, or get out of the way

I do the same trick with the 2 litre bottle. Loosen the filter, put on the two litre bottle and let the filter drip in.

Nothing flows like a straight pipe

Yup same here. Nice trick. Unless you DROP the bottle like I have done :( DOH!

Not the easiest. But not that bad. There are WORSE! Many FWD cars have them above the exhaust pipe!

No joke on the Intrepid! My mom has one...not too easy to work on.

Also on the FWD filter locations. My step-mother has a 96 Contour...easiest way I've found to change the filter is to remove the passenger side tire. Stupid Ferd's... :)

My wife had a '91 Mazda Protege that had the oil filter above the exhaust. You would smell burning oil for a few days after an oil change. Nice.

Did they change the design from the '01 to the 02? I have the '01 4.7 and just crawl under the truck and take it off. Never had a problem with the angle.

I normally loosen the filter a bit first then take out the drain plug next. Seems if I do this I don't get as much overflow from the filter once I take that off.
