the 5-45RFE is the 5 speed. I don't think it made it to the 3.9's.

Someone else will know.

One sure way to know.

1 - DO you have a kickdown cable going form thetranny to the throttle body? 5-45RFE do NOT Have those.

2 - when you put it in gear can you hear a series of faint clicking sounds? That's the electronic selenoids int he 5-45RFE.

FWD auto's have been electronic since somewhere around '95 I know that. Trucks didn't get them till 99' I think on the 4.7 then the Hemi, etc.

He definitely doesn't have a 5-45RFE, the electronically controled tranny found behind later 4.7 and now 5.7 motors. Definitely not a 5 speed; even the '00 4.7 got the 4 speed 45RFE. Not at all related to those.
The internals in the tranny behind the 3.9 can be beefed up with heavier duty clutchpacks, etc. though.

Lead, follow, or get out of the way

The transmisson you got dddd is not 5 speed auto. Its more like a 3 speed with an overdrive gear.

Mostly likely you got a 42RE transmisson. The 545 its also a 3 speed with tow overdrive gears. Now you know when you lock out your over drive (towing, city driving) its shift down to 3rd.

Like STS said you have either the 44RE or the 42RE trans, it is a 3speed trans with an overdrive gear

depends on if you beat the crap out of it everyday with your driving habits like some people do.. and also if you take care of it (regular trans fluid changes)

Transmission cooler can help.

Shift kit.

Good fluid and kept at proper level.

Transmissions are not forgiving at all if ran low. Once it slips, and you drive it while it slips it is toast immediately.
