Subject: Custom Trailer from Dak Bed
IP: Logged

Message:
Hello,

I've recently relocated and I have been hauling a lot of junk around and I've been needing a trailer so I was wondering about those who take an old truck bed and use that?

We have 3 dakota frames with beds here at my house and I think it'd be a pretty cool project to put some of this junk to good use. My main concern is keeping it road-legal... I'd also like to know if anyone has some information or a website where people have done this... I'd like it to look pretty decent.

Thanks in advance,
-Jason

Can't help you with your technical or legal aspects, but here's a photo I took of a Dakota trailer someong built and showed. (Be aware that it will load real slow because of the uplink speed and picture size.)

ha, ya... I always thought the same thing but if you check out some Mini-truckin Mags or such, you can see some that look pretty decent... I just want a project to work on so I can haul my other projects around later on lol.

Damn, runinning mudders with a roll bar and worrying about something being redneck ? ;-)

Here you could register that as a home made trailer, and register it for whatever the tires were rated for. Not too much in the way of legal problems; rig the lights to work of course.

Lead, follow, or get out of the way

Montana.... Build it like you want it including proper lights with directionals. Go to the courthouse and get some papers they require you to fill out plus they give you numbers to stamp in frame. After all is done, have it inspected by highway patrol. With signed approval back to courthouse to register> GVW is what you say it is and don't get caught hauling more then your lienced for > That's it .

1st thing is realistically assess your equipment, work space and ability. It is not a novice project with a mini-torch.
Do some measuring and see what the length it is that you want from wheels to tongue. The longer it is the easier it is to back, short ones jack-knife to quick. Then look at the frame and see where you will attach to it. Rectangle steel tube is great for the tongue, but make sure it is heavy enough and support it from the sides. You need the tongue to fit your receiver. Channel works fine for side braces. Go to an RV store and see the different types. "V" types and straight 3" or 4".
Last point, you can use you axle, but the other option is brakes, a mobile home axle with electric brakes, hooked up and working can save your life if you drive in an area with hills. You haven't lived until you clear 4 lanes of downhill traffic with an out of control trailer on the back of your favorite pickup. Talk about puckering up...I know.
Plan ahead, double the price and expect to meet Murphy in person.
