Subject: brake light goes out when braking
IP: Logged

Message:
In my '97 Dakota, when I have the headlights on, the back left light comes on. But when I brake, it goes out instead of lighting up brighter. It isn't the bulb because I took the one from the other side and put it in there and the same thing happens.

Any ideas on what I need to fix it?

Thanks!

try looking for a loose wire going to the bulb

yep./.,. wiring is messed up... try a volt meter at the bulb, and test....

you're prolly getting a crossed wire, or a bad ground somewhere. electrical is a BIOTCH.

the headlight switch creates one path, the brake light switch usually creates a different path to ground... might be worth having a tech look at if you're not electrically endowed... it may be "expensive" but so is a ticket.... and you'd still end up having to get it fixed...

If you have the tow package, it could be the interface connected to the brake lights.

Try replacing the bulb. It's a dual element bulb and they do funny things when one goes out. Also, considering you've already tried the other bulb, this may be of better use to you. Spray the socket with contact cleaner. Could be that when voltage is applied to the braking surface it's crossing over in the socket and effectively grounding it out..
