I was interested in synthetic Royal Purple but was unable to find it in the Charleston, WV area. Summit Racing has it but you must pay extra because of some hazardous shipping regulation. I cannot afford to pay the extra to have it shipped.
Synthetic oil is expensive enough without the extra shipping cost.
The dealerships here dont have Amsoil. Even if they did I prefer not to go there as it takes forever to get help.

I switched over to Amsoil in my dakota and my wife's civic. The civic's oil pan started leaking and now I think the dakota's rear main, or oil pan is leaking. Just something to keep in mind.

LOL?? Keep in mind that only you and a few out of probably millions of users worldwide had a problem with this? Even deeper, I'd say 70% of guys in the Dakota R/T club use it religously with nothing but praise for it. There's always problems here and there with every product under the sun man, but usually it's not the products fault. Like in your case, I'm sure, depending on where the leak is actually coming from in your Dak. you have a beat rear main, or a bad oil pan gasket. The other inferior oil was just allowing sludge to stay gunking it up, plugging the defect. The civic is probably the same way. There's no reason to blame it on the time tested and race/extreme heat and cold proven lubrication products of Amsoil.

I don't see how AMSOIL would cause a leak. I run AMSOIL motor oil, gear lube, and tranny fluid in my Dak. My mom's Corolla runs AMSOIL motor oil as well. Haven't had any problems with leaks. I think if your seals are already going bad, a leak could occur with synthetic since it is thinner (not sure if "thinner" is the correct term) and can get through the seal breaks a lot easier. Atleast that is what I gather from my readings on one of the differences of Synthetic and Petro-based oils.

Shipping through AMSOIL isn't all that bad. Best thing to do is to just get the most of your money and sign up for their Preferred Customer program and buy a whole bunch if you like their product. Really nice if you have more than one vehicle to maintain. First and foremost though I would get their Universal ATF fluid (if your Dak is an auto). It is practically liquid gold and my transmission and transfer case have been working flawlessly. Royal Purple is pretty good from what I hear.. atleast that is what they always push on the automotive TV programs on SpikeTV. It is fairly expensive though from what I remember (not that AMSOIL isn't). Check out the AMSOIL website and compare your prices with and without the Preferred Customer option added to your cart. Then you can also check shipping, taxes, etc. Heck, anything is better than Dealership markup.

Don't pay more for Amsoil when you can go anywhere and get Mobil1 synthetic which is less expensive and race proven.

I use Mobil1 in all of my vehicles and so do the majority of professional racers.

Oh boy, we have a live one here. This thread simply states that someone was looking for Amsoil, he wasn't, nor anyone else wondering other options. Yeah mobil 1 is good, I use it for my oil, nothing else though. So quit jacking up a thread fellas.

My recommendation Stu is to try AMSOIL Motor oil. If you don't like it, then try Mobil 1. If you don't like that, then try Royal Purple. You know your truck and how it feels. Just do what you need to to make it happy. :)

jpkomm how syn causes leaks is on a high mileage engine.it can have build up around the seals with dino. its a known fact that syn has a cleaning action that will over time break down that build up and cause a leak. syn will not cause a leak everytime as I would say out of 10 vehicles 1 would develope a leak. keep in mind the leak was always there it was just pluggged with the dino oil.

sorry I wasnt impressed with M-1 in my 4.7. I run German Castrol 0w-30 and it makes my engine run alot smoother through the RPM range. Amsoil is a great product. it never hurts to try a product. I will try amsoil when I get the funds to do so.

as far as you saying M-1 is race proven. I can bet you its not the same formulation thats in the stores.

Ive tried Royal purple - no problems except it was almost impossible to find - I wasnt aware that Napa carried it. I travel alot and do my own oil changes. It gets hard to find a consistant source for a good synthetic oil (and other things). I've never tried Mobile one - If its in the parts store I may give it a try.

Pepboys also carries royal purple. I dont know if there are any there where you live.

If there are any performance shops near you, try there.

I've been using mobile 1 in all of mine and my wife's vehicles with no problems. It's cheaper and easier to find than amsoil. I get 5 quarts for $19.88 at wal-mart + tax and I use purolator filters from autozone/advance/pepboys.
