ey folks, I need a little direction with my dakota. Got in my car the other day to start it but it was dead. I jump started it but the engine dies once i let off of the gas. A friend with a dakota said he had the same problem after his battery died and his dad did something to reset the computer or something, although he was not sure. I'm kinda broke so i'd like to handle it without a mechanic if possible but i just want to know what it might be. I dont think its the alternator or the ignition. Im hoping it is just something small but i would love help from anybody with any idea what it might be. Thanks a lot, i appreciate any help you all can give me.

Buy a new battery. Check you cables for corrosion (replace or repair as necessary)
If the pcm doesn't have enough voltage to operate, it can't keep your truck at idle.

You might want to check the voltage reg/alternator too. The truck will run if you start it up and pull the battery out, but if the alternator is not up to snuff, then it will die.

If it ain't broke, fix it til it is.

Don't know if this makes sense or not but I'll post it anyways. Can't remember where I heard this.

Even if your alternator is working fine, you still need the juice (voltage) from the battery to run the fuel injectors. So I would check the battery first. Big difference between carb engines and fuel injected ones.

BTW, how old is the battery you now have?

When my battery went, there were no warning signs. Trying to jump start it didn't work well either. I even tried to keep the engine revved by placing continuous pressure on the accelerator with no luck. Thought it might be the alternator, but after replacing the battery, all is fine and that was 5 months ago. When the die nowadays, they just lay down without warning.

Check the battery yourself with a multimemter or take it to your local autoparts store, they should be able to test it for free.

Why go straight for a new battery if you dont know that is the issue yet and it's free to test.

ObieWonDakota you are correct. Check the haynes manual wiring diagrams and you'll see alot of components are wired/spliced together. I think on my old 95 the injectors were wired to the O2 sensor, the ASD and shared a ground via the PCM and possibly another sensor, I can't remember.

I had an issue where the ground was lose (pins 11 and 12 as I recall - again check wiring diagram) and the truck would stall/not always start. I pushed the pins back in tested with my multimeter to know they were good and epoxied them in place. No more grounding issues and no more stalls/no starts.

I had the same problem... turns out that the neg terminal on the battery was loose. I just cleaned it, tightend it up, and then charged the battery; no problem since.

I geuss my truck is different then, if I start it up on the battery, I can disconnect it, and charge another battery(I had to do this on my wife's car...I had no jumper cables or a battery charger)

If it ain't broke, fix it til it is.

I think you should only be able to disconect the positive cable and still be able to run but I guess if the alternator is strong enough you could

wait scratch that, I guess it would just have to be grounded good enough to the motor.
