Hi everyone, My service engine light is on in my 2000 dakota. I maintain my truck for everything right along if it needs it or not. Any tips on how to turn this light off? There is nothing wrong with truck.

There is a way to reset your pcm, by using the key in the ignition. I just usually pull both the positive and negative battery cables off for about 5 minutes. The reconnect them starting with the positive cable first, then the negative cable second. The check engine light should be gone when you start your truck. At least this works on mine and it is a 1997. Good luck, hopefully it works for you.

Maintained or not, the light will come on if the computer detects a problem somewhere.

Check the code out and see what it is. To do so, turn the ignition on (do not start), off, on, off and on again. Where your odometer reading should be, it will show any codes in this format: PXXXX. X's being digits 0-9. Post it here or look it up yourself and you will know whether or not it should be ignored.

Also, to resest the code, you can pull the connectors from your PCM for a minute or so them reconnect. This will save you from needing to reset your radio presets etc etc. If you have a 4.7, the PCM is on the passenger fender. Not positive on PCM location on other models.

the bad news is: if the light is on, there IS something wrong with your truck. the good news is: do what caulk04 says and it will tell you what the problem is..

then fix it

caulk04, you only need to pull the connector that is nearest the firewall.

Jooey, you might think there is nothing wrong with your truck but the PCM thinks otherwise. check the codes as stated above. maybe nothing but you never know until you check.

Do what Seenit says but I also had a bad fuel cap seal that gave me a service engine alarm. After putting on a new cap it was fixed.

You could damage the PCM if you unplug any of the connectors while the battery is still hooked up.
Disconnect the battery first.
