Subject: Neeed better brakes!!

Message:
I have a '99 4x4 with 33's on it. My brakes don't cut it. The rotors are warped but I have plenty of life left on the pads. Can I use slotted rotors and my old pads ( if they don't have any groves.), or do you need to match the rotors to he pads? What other options are there?

The Raybestos/PG-Plus are good rotors and less expensive than powerslots. I bracket race and have had to make many hard stops just before the line. No warping nor grooving on the rotors.

Like he said, get a new set of Raybestos rotors. They are good quality and inexpensive.

For pads, pick a good set depending on the kind of driving you do. Personally, I prefer carbon fiber from Autozone. They are excellent quality, work better than stock, and are inexpensive.

Ceramics are good, but many of them are not recommended for towing.

I agree with the prior comments. I use Raybestos PG-Plus rotors on my Dak and haven't had a problem with warping. I also use the Raybestos QuietStop ceramics. The rotors cost about $58 a piece from Advance Autoparts I think.

Bob, Have you ever had to break in those carbon metallics from AutoZone. I purchased a pair of them and have been having some problems since then. Just wondering if it is something else in the system or the pads. Thanks.

Besides the cost, are the slotted rotors better at stopping? Are there better calipers to put on?

Slotted rotors essentially "shave" buildup off your pads to make them stop better. So, yes, they do stop better. Downside is though is that they tend to be noisier and can wear out your pads faster. I've read where people have bought new front calipers to help the goofy stock Dakota calipers, but I suggest you just buy a GOOD brand of rotor and a GOOD brand of pads then see how it wears.

I couldn't find the Raybestos rotors at any stores by me, but Summit Racing has a solid, Power Stop rotor that is vented part # PWR-AR-8738. Are these rotors the same as or better quality than the Rabestos?
