Subject: Brake Calipers Freeze occasioanlly
IP: Logged

Message:
Greetings,

I have a 2001 4.7 4wd Regular cab 5speed Dakota. Occasioanlly, one or the other of the front calipers will drag somewhat and cause the truck to pull to that side. It seesm like it happens after the ABS has actuated. Once the truck cools off, everything goes back to normal and the problem won't usually recoocur for several weeks.
I replaced the pads and rotors (rotors wapred at 32K) about 10,000 miles ago and have noticed the problem ever since. I'm guessing that I did something to cause this but I've double checked everything I can think of and can't figure it out. Any ideas as to what might be wrong?

I have cured dragging disk brakes by giving the caliper pins a good cleaning and some lube.
Those are the pins the caliper slides, to allow caliper centering during braking. Sometimes the pins need some attention.

Thanks for the suggestion. I tried that a month or so ago. When I cleaned and re-lubbed the pins I used white lithium grease. I've always used that on other vehicle's Disk Breaks without any problems. Is there a problem with using it on Dakotas?
I also blead the breaks when I re-lubbed the caliper pins.

That's your problem, the lithium grease.
Get some high temp silicone BRAKE grease.

I had a similar problem on my 2000 QC AWD right after replacing
the front rotors and brake pads (caliper pins/slides were cleaned
and greased with the appropriate grease). My right front caliper
started sticking, and would not fully release. The brakes would
heat up to the point that you could smell them, with resulting
brake fad. After cooling, they would work fine for a while. I think
my problem was mainly caused by the piston sticking. I ended
replacing the calipers with rebulit units, which fixed the problem.

Dan,

That is what is happening to my truck, except both calipers will stick (not at the same time) on occasion.

I suspect I will have replace the calipers as well. Anyone have suggestions on where to get them? I usually have good luck with NAPA parts, but is there a better (not necessarily cheaper) alternative?

ZxZr,

If your going to do it yourself, I would probably go with NAPA.
They generally carry good quality parts.

After my experience, I didn't want to mess with the brakes
anymore, so I went to Les Schwab (my brother-in-law works
there). As part of the brake job, they replaced the calipers with
rebuilt units (I'm not sure which company rebuilt them).

I'm glad I did this, because two months ago (a year after they did
the brake job), I started having the same problem. It was much
less severe this time, but caused significant brake dust to
accumulate on one wheel (I'm guessing constant, light contact).
The brake job was warranted (2 years/24,000 mi), so I took the
truck back in. They declared a sticking caliper, and replaced the
pads/calipers again (no charge). So far so good...

Although I really like my truck, I don't really have many positive
things to say about the Dakota brakes...

Dan,

Thanks for the info. I feel the same way about the truck. My first Dakota was an '87 2wd and I had similar brake problems with it. My 2001 is a much better truck in all regards, except apparently for the brakes

My 2001 dakota 4WD has the same problem. My caliper just froze up on me again for the 2nd time in 10 months..I was told there is not much you can do except replace pads and calipers and rotors. How much are new or rebuilt calipers?..

Replacing the pads and rotors- sure shy not, eveyone else does.

All it needed, as has been said, is lubing it WITH the RIGHT kind of grease.

I had a post recenlty about Lubing them lately?
