Is it possible to remove the shift knob on an automatic with overdrive on the column? I'd like to upgrade and haven't been able to twist, turn, pull or jiggle the knob free, even after removing the overdrive button.

It is a 2001 4x4 quad cab 4.7, btw.

It's possible...but I've no idea HOW you do it. Some people have done 5 speed swaps or relocated the automatic shifter from the column to the floor.

Are you trying to relocate the shifter, or just remove the end knob from the shaft?

Just remove the knob from the end of the shaft. I don't really want to get into moving the shifter off the column, just replace the knob on the end.

If you are trying to pry it off, just be careful because the wires running to the O/D button run through the shifter

I didn't pry too hard because I didn't want to destroy anything and then have a messed up shifter. It is easy to remove the OD button, leaving the wires hanging, but I didn't want to do anything else too drastic until I was sure how it was supposed to be done.

Does anyone know where I could find the answer on how to do this? I can't seem to find anything with Google or in my Haine's book.

Thanks.

Could be bolted on. Did you look down the hole under the button?

Yeah, after taking the OD button off I looked down into the knob (several times, actually to make sure I wasn't missing anything) and there's no bolt, just the two OD wires going into the shaft.

I've tried turning the knob, but without using any vice grips because I don't want to completely mangle it. With just my hands, it's just not turning (not much to get ahold of). If I knew for a fact that was how to remove it, I'd go ahead with the grips and mangle the stupid thing.

I could probably help if I knew a 1992 shifter was the same or similar to your year... by the way, can anyone tell me if the 1992 shifter column is hollow? i'd like to put my OD button the the end of the shifter as well.

thanks,
-Jason
