Subject: Very Slow Coolant Loss - Should I worry?
IP: Logged

Message:
Hi,

I have had a 2004 4.7L dakota (bought new) for a little over 1.5 years (about 21,000 miles of driving). Over that time I've noticed a very slow coolant loss in the reservoir. It started full, but this weekend, for the first time, I added about 1 quart to the reserve tank to bring it back up. I've never had a vehicle that had a noticeable loss of coolant, but I was wondering if this is worth worrying about since it's so slow. I have not noticed anything in the oil when I changed it, no stains on the driveway, etc. What do you guys think?

Thanks,
PLL

take it in to the dealership under the warranty. its not normal and a small leak always turn in to a big leak later on and then can cost alot.

I would have your oil analyzed. Oil analysis can show a head gasket leak long before any physical symptoms.Some people get a neg glycol on their oil analysis but high potassium and sodium readings from the additives from anti-freeze. They shorten their oil change intervals until it gets bad enough to get fixed under warranty or when they can afford the repair. Getting anti-freeze in your oil is bad for bearings. My 03 4.7 has no anti-freeze loss. You may be losing it somewhere else but if it`s a head gasket you want to correct it ASAP.

Go to the following site for info on how to get your oil tested,also you could go to the used oil analysis forum and type "head gasket" under search to see what I mean;

I've had two Dakotas with 318's and they both did this. Never experienced any problems from it.

All my freeze plugs rusted and coolant slowly leaked out of them. I had them replaced with copper ones, and there is no longer a problem. Not sure if thats your problem, but just a suggestion.
