Subject: 2004 4wd doesn't always disengage

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone else ever had the following problem. I have AWD and the 244 transfer case (electronic controlled). Switching from AWD to 4Hi works fine (I think - but it's hard to tell), but switching back works about 50% of the time. The LEDs around the switch light properly like it completed the shift back to AWD(solid LED lit next to "AWD"), but it didn't. I know it didn't because I feel the wheels unpleasantly fighting when turning in a parking lot or something. To get out of 4Hi, I usually try to coast (around 5 mph) in a straight line. I often have to retry it a few times to get it to work right, meaning I switch to 4hi and back. Anyone else have this problem?

Thanks.

Same thing here! My 2002 QC AWD would go between AWD and 4HI when new. Now it requires backing up a few feet to let the pressure off of the hubs. Also I'll bet the owners manual or like me, an insert for the AWD states it is necessary to reverse to unlock the hubs. Sometimes a pain, but works every time.

Good Luck!

Mine is not AWD, but it's 4WD.

When mine gets picky going from HI to LO, etc, I pop my tranny in neutral at a slow roll and that usually does it for me.

I have noticed this on other vehicles, but on mine for the first time yesterday. 231 transfer case (I think thats it, NON AWD in anyway)

Mine always seems to unlock either immediately or after a short distance in forward (easy accel or coasting).

GraphiteDak - Yours will shift into/out of 4L while in gear? Mine will just blink at me till I'm almost stopped in neutral, which I'd do anyway.

As a side note, I finally figured out why mfgr's went to the electric, computer controlled transfer case. I work with a big ego'd guy that drives an 04 HEMI Ram with AWD (Its a status symbol for him, and its ALL he can do to pay his bills...stupid). Well, we have a 95 Chevy at work to plow with and he is just lost having a manual shift t-case where as I would prefer it. Anyway, just venting cause this guy is really mentally challenged with vehicles.

Nope, can't be in gear when going from HI to LO, and vice versa.
I pretty much ALWAYS have to put it in neutral. Sometimes it takes some playing with it.

How I usually do it is just before I am to a stop, I pop the tranny in Neutral. Sometime as I slow to a stop it pops into 4LO, or back to 4HI/2HI whichever be the case.

The only thing that works smoothly on the fly is 2HI to 4HI and back. The other night after I did my 4.56 gears up front, it seemed to be going in to 4HI from 2HI and back very quickly even at 30MPH, etc.

Going to LO always takes some messing around with it.

I was thinking maybe the guy with the AWD should try his at a slow roll while putting his tranny in neutral to see if that allows his to fully switch back and forth.

Graph's right, I have AWD and mine works every time. Simply through it in neutral going less than 15mph and it will engage.

My experience is this: To shift either way to and from 2 Hi and 4 Hi, it helps to take the torque off the gears momentarily. As you shift, let up on the throttle, then resume driving.

I have a 2000 Dakota 4.7 full time 4WD SLT and I have the same problem. I can shift from "4WD" to "4WD HI LOCK" (on my transfer case on the floor) with no problems. When I shift back to "4WD" the front and rear stay locked and I can't even park the goddam thing because it bucks and grinds. I try backing it up, dropping it from neutral to drive, etc, but nothing works. One day it didn't unlock the differentials for about 20 miles!

I read somewhere on Dodge's site that it can have something to do with uneven tire wear, like if you don't rotate them enough...

If anyone ever figures this out, lemme know! It sucks not being able to get the differentials to unlock.

Also I noticed now that my rear ABS isn't working any more on snow or ice, but there is no "ABS" error light coming on to tell me that there is somthing wrong with it. I also read that this can be due to poor tire grip, but my tires are pretty new (and they are wrangler RTS, what the truck came with)!
