My 2001 4.7 is throwing out a code. I should have wrote it down, but its an emissions code 0440, something like that. In any event my repair manual says its the gas tank emssions valve (the device similar to the charcoal cannister to absorb gas fumes). Its next to the battery, has a wire running to it and 2 fuel lines. The book doesn't list any test or way to clean it. I reset the code once and it stayed off a couple of weeks, then it came back, cleared the code itselef and now its back.

Anybody know about fixing these or have a suggestion?

Thanks for the quick reply Dune_OP.

Gas cap. Don't know. I've been gassing it up for years without this code popping up. Do gas caps wear out? And how do you check? So is that for sure a possibility?

I do like simple inexpensive solutions to problems. With my luck, -- that's never what it is.

Well the way you described the code it makes me think it's a gas cap. But they're very cheap to replace so it doesn't hurt to spend the little bit of dough and check.

When I got my 04 Dak the check engine light would come on during log trips. 300km or more. After my next fuel up it would go away. So I replaced the cap and haven't had a problem with it again.

Before I go into checking everything else or even taking it to the dealer, thats what I'd do.

Dune_Op is right. I had the P0442 code and after changing the gas cap, haven't had is since and that was 10K ago. Your code falls within the same category of codes. Be sure to get an aftermarket cap, not one from the dealer. There really is no way to check the gas cap unless you have a pressure tester. A replacement cap will cost less than $10 and it's well worth it to try first. Remember, just because you hear that gas gap click, doesn't mean it is sealing properly. Hope it works.

try just taking the cap off and putting it on differnetly. I know, sounds dumb, but may work. Those caps have a rubber piece that forms a seal when the cap is closed.

This is something you can try quickly. If that works for a while and it happens again, time for a new cap.

Funny thing. This recently happened on my wife's 2001 grand am. She filled up and didn't put cap on tight and her service engine light came on.

The owners manual explicity says to check and tighten the gas cap.

Apparently this is a wide spread issue among car manufacturers.
