i believe the FSM states 6psi min. and 35-65 @ 3K rpm. your's sounds ok but, check the oil level and if you're really concerned, put a mechanical gage on it to check for sure.

My 5.9 runs at least 30 psi even at idle. It possible its the sending unit so as daddio suggested do a check using a mechanical one. If its low even with mechanical your pump is properly starting to wear out. Im gonna replace mine with a high volume one pretty soon. Oil pumps are cheap and oh so very important, I dont know why people dont replace them more often.

thanks guys and the sending unit does need to be replaced. i was just wondering because it would go up and down so much. how hard is it to put in a mechanical one? if i every drop the belly pan than i will replace the oil pump. :) thanks

ps i check the oil 3 times a month and she only eats a qt between oil changes. with 153k miles.

It would probably not be too difficult to add a mechanical oil pressure gauge, but whatever you do, you should keep the stock sending unit in that place also (it's okay to use a T-fitting with pressure gauges if there's room) because the ECM probably uses it to determine if the engine is cranking (or running) so it will energize the fuel pump...

Also, be careful where and how you route the tubing through the firewall to the gauge-- wouldn't want oil spraying everywhere! For that reason alone, you might want to go with an electric one instead...

Mattleg > Really is your choice to install a high volumn pump but I'm not seeing the reason why > If you do the book work you'll find out there real purpose is for race loose engines > There not ment to give higher pressure < Just to be sure you have enough volumn And that's what it's called > HIGH VOLUMN PUMP > If you really feel the need DO NOT but a stronger relief spring in it > Your playing with dynamit far as your main seals are concerned >

a quart between changes? That is quite a bit. Have you tried to track down the leak?

And you can test the guage on the dash from the sending unit using a jumper wire. I have posted instructions before on how to do this.
