Remembered this no-buck trick and thought I would "submit for your approval" (apologies to The Twilight Zone")

When my hubs needed replacement this summer (they made some rather striking wear patterns in my front tires), I noticed the two (or three, can't remember) bolts holding the "splash shield" on. Removed both sides and put the bolts back, no rotor warpage yet... and you can see the whole backside of the rotors from under the truck!

Anyone else tried this? 'Cause I know there are others out there sharper than me... ha ha!

Let me know what you think!

Taking off your splash guards isnt really a good idea, especially since all your relays and such are so close to the wheel wells. They warp cause there cheap inconsistent metal.

If you really wanna prevent your rotors from warping, buy decent ones from stop tech or brembo or whoever makes good ones. You could find your self a machinest and fab up some adapters to run viper brakes.

If you wanna keep your current rotors from warping, when you finally stop at a light, lay off the breaks just enough to keep from moving, and then every few seconds creep forward. This prevents one spot on the rotor from taking all the heat and pressure from the pads and caliper.

If you really get inventive make your self a home made cooling duct by pulling air off the grill and direct it at the rotors. I have acutally seen a guy that bought a couple of those fake turbo air intake fan things off ebay and put them in the air duct to cool the rotors even when the car wasnt moving. Seemed to work pretty good for him.

I noticed you have a perma-cool fan "The Purple 1". I have been looking into replacing my clutch fan. I 'm leaning toward the black magic because it comes with the shroud. I was just wondering what setup you have with the perma-cool. Which fan did you use? Did you keep the stock shroud? Can any perma-cool even fit in the stock shroud?

The "splash shields" I was referring to are the pieces of thin metal that bolt to the spindle and surround the rear of the rotors. They are not the "fender liners" that keep road splash away from the engine compartment. Don't misunderstand me, 'cause I'm not flaming you, but I found this trick several years ago in a well-repected Mopar mag ("Mopar Action" namely). It just allows more air to circulate around the rotors for better cooling...

However, I did ask for opinions, and I still welcome them: good, bad, or "Spali"

Funny you should ask about my fan setup: I replaced a "Black Magic" number 150 with the "Perma Cool" unit. I used number 19117, which is the "18 inch High Performance" model with a number 18905 adjustable temp sensor kit (which does the same thing as the built-in unit on the "Black Magic"). The only problem I had with the "Black Magic" was the somewhat large (though strong) mounting brackets, and the noise (though it was always effective). The Perma Cool unit is a little nicer looking (in my opinion), covers more core area, and quieter. It is rated at a little less airflow, but during this past hot and humid summer, it was effective (though it ran a little more often than the "Black Magic". Incidentally, the Perma Cool unit is designed to run "open" without a shroud, and I am not using the factory one, either. Just have to watch the blades, though!

Oh sorry, I thought you were talking about the fender splash guards. Yeah removing the rotors splash guard does work well. Every car I do brakes on I remove those things. If you drive on gravel roads you might leave them there, sometimes rocks can get caught up between rotor and calpier.

As for the fan. I think Im will go with black magic. Noise doesnt bother me and I really like my fingers right where they are. As far as mounting goes, Im gonna use there huge ones till I have time to make so nice custom factory looking ones.

I have the 04 Dak which already has an electric fan in it and boy that thing is noisey! I LOVE IT! When I'm at Tim Hortons and the person in front of me is about to order and then it comes on and the Tim Hortons girls is like WHAT!? WHAT!? I laugh, I'm like oh yah, thats power! Even if it is just an electric fan. LOL!!!

From what I've noticed, the calapers are what is causing the rotor problems. They stick. When they stick, they cause the rotors to heat up excessivly. I replaced my calapers and had no problems since. Same goes for my dad. My right calaper would stick so bad the wheel would shake. Rotor got so hot it cracked.

I never thought about the caliper sticking before. It could be the cause in some cases. You dont need to replace them every time though. A rebuild kit can he had for much less. Lube up the slides real good and your back good as new.

Hmm, all good points, good points!

For what it's worth, I have 99,xxx miles on my original calipers (2 pad changes so far: first one was warped rotors, second one was an upgrade to Morse Ceramic while my hubs were replaced-- that was when I removed the rotor splash shields)...

Any others (fan or brakes)?
