Not sure on your model year but EGR is the Exhaust Gas Recirulation valve. Check with dodge parts for the price of the part only. Then call the service department and get ballpark quote to replace the EGR valve (including part of course). Then you decide if it's worth doing it yourself. It's a piece of cake to replace. After replacing it, pull your negative battery lead and leave it off for approx. 10 minutes and reinstall it. This will clear the trouble code.

The EGR is a 2 piece system. The valve assembly which bolts to the mainfold in at the back of the block to the left (passenger side) of the distributor cap. connected via vacuum hoses to it is the solenoid portion. This is where the electrical connector plugs in at.
I just replaced the EGR on my 95 3.9 and it was around $65 at pepboys I think. It was a little cheaper there than advance, autozone or napa.
Even though it's 2 separate pieces, it's sold as 1 unit with a gasket. the solenoid portion of mine (made of plastic) somehow hit something hot and melted and created a vacuum leak.
If you want to test it, i can get you some instructions on how to using a vacuum guage/tester. I would visually verify the solenoid and vacuum hoses first.

Careful, Dan, that happened to my brother when he owned my Dak, and it was a clogged catalytic converter. Might want to keep an eye on it for symptoms.

Bob that's interesting. I have pictures i will post of the melted grove.
Clogged cat, that's interesting. Funny thing is that I had a new cat installed a couple years ago which turned out to be bad, could not drive above like 45 mph, sounded like a vacuum leak driving at that speed.
The shop replaced it the next day and things were fine. The truck has never backfired because of it, but it might have been bad that long.
