if your truck is having a hard time turning over, when your driving and your head lights began to dim/if the truck doesn't start in the morning when it is cold out"or on the day of your very important interview<you can try adding a little bit of water to the battery but that is a bad idea for if you add too much or your friend filling it gets battery acid in your EyEs ouchh that burns"you can take a multimeter from the N terminal to the P terminal and if it reads lower than 12.6volts the battery is not fully charged.

with 9Ok and it being a 99 the battery is reaching the end of its exists unless its the third battery.

Test it with a multimeter or take it in to an autoparts store as most offer free battery testing.

check the battery terminals for corrosion, if it's too bad it can make a good battery seem like it's going bad.

Have it checked under a load. If it's bad replace it. A dead battery in the middle of nowhere is not fun.

Oddly enough, the traditional signs of battery failure no longer apply as much as they used to. Unless it fails quickly, one of the first things you'll notice is an erratic idle. It will just drop off until the engine dies. Why? I don't know, it just is.

Yeah, idle sucks, and one day it wouldnt start after driving the
truck for 15 mins.. iac valve is a-ok too, which i thought it might of
been. I have alot of battery corossion too now, which i keep
cleaning off... it might be time.. and ill also check it with a
voltemeter i have now..

Might be a good excuss to get a new yellowtop.

im not sure but i heard somewhere (maybe here) that the engine draws a small charge off the battery to run/idle, it does not draw it from the alternator
why i dont know

Way to much bad information here guys > If you don't know don't guess at things < Your Just confusing the person asking the question > when the truck is NOT running EVERYTHING is powered by the battery provided it has the ability > Remember > There is no electricity in a battery > It is a chemical reaction > You can turn everything on in the truck and still start it if the battery is in good condition > Best to start first reguardless > Once started the alternater takes over To an amount dependant on how fast the engine is running > Doesn't take a very large amount of RPM's to get Full charge from the alternater > But at idle you can over come the alternater and at this point the battery makes up the differance PROVIDED it has the capasity to do so > If it is dead or near dead or just weak with age or bad corroded connections , it will have no reserve to hold the voltage up reasonably and here in lies the PCM problems involving rough or no idle > Take it to any parts store (preferably one your willing to buy a battery at) And they will check your charging system and battery for free > WALLA > your in business hopefully > NOW THE CORROSION > You have to remove the cables from the battery to clean them > This is where the contact is made , not the outside of cables > I use hot water with baking soda mixed in it shaking it up in a gallon jug > Poor over battery slowly > Using fresh hot water and baking soda mixed place the cables in the solution till they stop bubbling > Then scrape the inside of cables with a cable/post cleaner till it shines and do the same to battery posts > Put cables back on battery > To TOTALLY STOP the corosion, poor some carro serup over the posts making sure it gets all around the base of the battery poste and totally covers the cables > this trick is the best I ever found in 45 years of running my own shop > The serup gets simi hard and stays that way till ready to replace the battery > Just poor hot water over cables and WALLA > All gone > Don't laugh > This is a very effective way to totally prevent corrosion >

I guess I was a luckey one.. One day I went to
start my 90 Dakota up (years ago) and I noticed
my clock and radio presets all reset as if I just
installed a new battery. The truck started ok
but that was all the warning I needed..
