I recently bouhgt a 1995 Dakota With a 3.9/ 5 Spd tranny....the rear seal in the tranny is leaking...i want to replace it.....the haynes manual says 10-30 motor oil....Autozone says gear oil....for lube. My brother in law works at the dodge dealership...but he hasnt called back yet...and i need to replace this seal and refill the tranny today. It has gear oil in it....but i was wondering too if that may be why its leaking...too much pressure inside with the gear oil. I think its an AX-15...the only code i can find on the sticker is DDQ.....

Thanks

Actually I think the recommended lube for an AX-15 is 10W30 oil. If it's a NV3500 though it takes syncromesh. A synthetic MTF. You could get it at the dealer for around $15 a quart here. Or go to Autozone and get the Pennzoil version for a lot cheaper. I'm not shure of the time that the 3.9 got the NV3500 but I think it was somewhere around that time. Easyest way to tell would be to call the dealer with your VIN # and get them to check what tranny it has.

My 97 has an AX-15 tranny. In the owner's manual it calls for 75W-90 GL3 gear oil, I use Royal Purple synthetic. I don't believe they used the NV trannies until 98.

If it ain't broke, fix it til it is.

I put Amsoil 5W-30 Heavy Duty Diesel oil in my NV3500 manual Tranny! Shifts smoother than ever.
and much quieter as well!
I'm told you can't use gear lube due to the yellow metals in the transmision, I believe they are used in the bearings and bushings.

Use gear lube in the ax-15
the nv-3500 was used on the 2000+ 3.9 Daks and in the 94+ v8 Dak Models

nv-3500 can use regular motor oil which is 5w-30.

Used the Amsoil 5-30 at first change and was happy with it. Would have used it again if the only local dealer had'nt pissed me off.
I'd always thought the AX-15 used 10-30 though. Hmm, maby im getting it mixed up with a different tranny.
Yes sulfur in some gear lubes does'nt play well with brass syncros and bushings.
