My brake lights won't come on. My signal lights are fine. I don't think there is a fuse in question here because the signal lights still work. Does anyone know how to troubleshoot the brake light switch? I was looking at it but don't know what each wire means. Any help or a wiring diagram would be great!

Thanks!

Year? Vehicle?

Genrally speaking, the switch is just a simple Off-On switch attached to the brake pedal, nothing complicated about them. The wiring harness plugs in to the switch as you would expect. Sometimes it's something as simple as dirt in the connector.

Unplug the harness from the switch. Use a paper clip or heavy piece of wire to jump across the two connections in the plug. If the lights come on, the circuit is fine.

If they don't, check the switch itself. Put a voltmeter or circuit tester across the two connections of the switch. Pressing the brake pedal down should close the switch. If it doesn't, the switch is either bad or misadjusted.

If those two tests are OK, then it's the connection. Clean the plug and switch terminals with conact cleaner. Make sure they are tight in the switch and the plug. Carefully plug it back in with the pedal depressed and watch the light.

Forgot to mention the truck is a 2000 Dodge Dakota SLT. I would check the switch but there are 8 wires going to it and I don't know which ones to check. Does someone know which two wires go to the brake lights?

Thanks for the feedback so far!
