Subject: Bed liners - Herculiner?
IP: Logged

Message:
I know there's Rhino Linings and some other stuff. I don't want to spend a lot of cash. That stupid Bedliner that came with the truck scratched up my bed, and I want a bedrug, so I'm looking for something to seal the bed before I put the bedrug in it to prevent rust. Just wondering about the Herculiner - it's only $100 compared to going for Rhino for like $400-500, acording to my girlfriend's granddad. So, I'd like some feedback on Herculiner, and the Bedrug (the actual bedrug, not a replica). Also, how well does the rug stand up without a bed cover? I don't have the cash flow for one of those PE Roll-top ones yet, and that's what I want. Feedback is appreciated! Check my site, too! I got my roll pan painted today, and the MBRP exhaust gets put on next week! :)

I put a 380 dollar Linex Liner in my QC and got
600 dollar credit when I traded for a new truck.
Needless to say I put in another Linex on my
new truck. They told me at Linex it would
increase the value of my truck but I did not
expect it to be that much.

I bought Herculiner for $79-$89 for herculiner at Sams Club. I aplied it to my Dakota Quad Cab. It has held up great so fare. I have put car parts and grocerys in it as well as reqular house hold items. Things do not slide around and it has not been damaged yet. I have enough left over to re coat the bed if need be. I am planning on installing a hard bed liner in the future. I installed the Herculiner to protect the bed from the hard liner when I put it in. My dads truck had some surface rust in every place that the hard liner touched his bed. We sanded the rust away and sealed his bed with Herculiner. Once the herculiner was fully cured we reinstalled his hard bed liner. So far so good. It has been about 5 months for me and 6 mounths for him and they are holding up great.

I did the Herculiner thing several months ago and wrote a little about it on my homepage here:

http://www.tiborsrealm.com/Dakota/ModsList.htm#Herculiner

Not mentioned, I somehow missed scuffing the bed, and now I'm paying as more and more red shows through from under it. I'm hoping another can is thick enough to compensate. A friend of mine did it correctly, and it's been indestructable. It has faded, however.

When I bought my previous truck, a GMC Sonoma, it had the "Linex" in it but the top rails weren't covered. I used the "Herculiner" on the rails and it held up well, until I sold the truck. I have a few friends that used the "Duplicolor" roll on liner in their trucks. You might want to stay away from it, if you see it. It's made by the Duplicolor company, that makes the touch up paint sold in the auto parts stores. It's not as strong as the Herculiner and faded quite a bit in their trucks.

Im looking at a product called Blue Diamond, It's a spray-in liner, The cost is 444.00 for my 6 1/2 bed. A friend of mine had this done with his Chevy and it really looks good. Its a little pricey but it should be permanent and comes in multiple colors. If your interested it is a made by a company called Specialty Products Inc. under the name of Full Metal Jacket the URL is:
http://www.specialty-products.com/products/polyurea/polyurea.html
They should be able to tell you who your nearest FMJ dealer is. Good Luck.

Ok, maybe I didn't mention this - I don't want it to BE my bed liner, I just want something cheap to protect the frame from rust, when I put my bedrug in. I'm going to go with Herculiner, but thanks everyone for they're excellent input!

I went with an ArmaCoat spray in liner.
I was about $340 for my 2001 QuadCab.

It is based on a "Hot Spray" system.
It dries in minutes, and you can haul in
it the same day. They showed me pictures
of a jeep that was sprayed in and out
with this product. It creates a very hard
permanent surface.

See them on the web.

I talked to the Line-X dealer in my town and he said that if you do a color match, they look like crap after less than a year! He said the color fades away and turns yellowish. According to him, this is for all the spray-on bed liners. Do any of you know anything about that or he was just full of it?

Chris;
I got a Line-X installed when I bought my '01 SLT CC 4x4. The Line-X dealer had a '98 Ram in for a "touch-up" for a color matched bed. Looked like crap and I suspect most spray-on color matching "weathers" the same or close to the same.
Technow, go with a full spray-on bed...I've carried over 4,000 lbs of waste garbage from cleanup on my 2 acre home, car parts, heavy metal, batteries, tires, really sharp scrap metal and I have yet to scrape or chip the Line-X bed.
I would not put any other type of bedliner in a truck after the pounding my bedliner took this summer!

Thanks to all who posted their experiences with bedliners in this and previous posts. I went with the Line-X spray on..in black.. and it looks great. The texture is rough enough that it resists laod shift but not so much that you can't push a load into the bed. I had it applied over the rail for those times loading from the side. My last truck had 15 years on the drop-in liner. With the rust and warping I would say I agree with the person who said in an earlier posting that it was little better than throwing in a hunk of cardboard. Live a little. Several years latter you will never miss the extra money spent but I suspect the liner will still be giving value.

TECHKNOW.. I think your idea of using the Herculiner is a great idea. You probally already know that its about 100.00 at any autoparts store. If you have a Sam's Club membership, Ive also seen it there for 89.99. As far as the bedrug goes, its the best thing Ive ever bought for my truck, It was easy to intstall, looks absolutely fabalous, anything ive got on it just washes away, it dries fast and it is very soft to the touch. Ive run mine plenty of times without my cover on, and it hasnt faded, or stained. I just powerwashed it out at the local car wash!

If your wanting the BedRug, one of our distributors is having a blowout on them right now, and you can get one for 270.00 SHIPPED!

Drop me an email.

Hi, Jonas
Is bedrug a spray-in? How does it attach to the bed? Will water get trapped in between and cause rust over the time?

The Bedrug is a carpeted bed liner. It zips together and installes with a 3M type velcro. It goes under your bedrails on the sides, and has a waterproof zipper that makes it a one piece. There are however some areas that it cant keep from letting water in. Check out its site at:

www.bedrug.com

I wouldnt think that if you put it in that rust would occur, but it may.
The nice thing is that the bedrug will not scratch your bed, and its removable. If I were to put one in and alreayd had scratches I would probally just thouch them up or put on a coat of hurcliner before I put it in to make sure. I had my bed resprayed (from all the dameage the hardbedliner caused) before I put mine in, so I wasnt worried about it.

I made the mistake of trying to save a few bucks on my 00 cc Dak 4.7 and went with the Herculiner for $100.00. I went to painstaking ends to make sure I prepped the surface correctly according to their instructions with the kit and even went to the web site for any other hints or tips. This liner scarps up very easy down to the metal! I have had to purchase an additional quart of Herculiner and recoated the bed twice! :-( In my last truck I had a Rhino Liner sprayed in and was very happy with it. Now I am screwed, there is no easy or effective way of re-moving the Herculiner from my bed so I can have a Rhino liner sprayed in. Does anyone know if there is an after market liner out there that can be sprayed over the Herculiner? " Sorry for the long post "

Chad

herculiner-you get what you paid for! spend some good dollas and get a spray-in, the Bedrug is REALLY great. Jonas it is actually secured in by hook and snaps, pretty much the same as velcro, but it holds a lot better. When i get my truck, i'm goin with the Bedrug. Eric
