 Subject: Engine Question

I just found a '96 318 for 150 and a junk yard and I was wondering how much of a pain it would be to put it in my '00. I'm assuming everything will mount up fine I was just wondering about electronics. It says it's a short block so I'm wondering what all I would need for the rebuild.

Ok just read something that answered one of my questions....all '96 and newer engines are OBD II right? So could I just go with a rebuild kit and then put it in my truck? I can just wire in the 2 extra injectors right? I know about my tranny and gears so basically it's the build and install that I have questions on.

Short block means no heads, or intake. May or may not include oil pan, fron cover, water pump, brackets, etc.
A rebuild will generally mean machining the block and crank, new bearings, new pistons, reconditioning or replacing the rods, new cam and lifters, gasket, etc, etc, etc.
Rebuilds generally get pretty expensive, they can be a hassle, and are time consuming. Expect to spend about $1000-1500 in parts and machine work. More if you have the machine shop assemble it.
OTOH, PAW will ship you a short block with all new parts and machining completed for about $1200. You have to assemble it yourself, but it's all ready to go.

OBD 3 will be able to check your car through satellite. I think soom GM's have a version of it already.
