If you plan on keeping your truck and you have the money, you should replace the chain.
Check that the belt tensioner is working.

Your engine is an interference type engine. If the chain fails, you will run your pistons into the valves(chain syncs the crank and cam)and turn the inside of the engine into mush. Your best bet then would be to replace the engine as it would be cheaper:( Replace the chain with the double roller type, these are much better than the stock chain as they don't stretch and loosen. They cost between $75-$105. As for the squeaky belts, it is probably your idler/tensioner pulley bearings. Check out this post: http://www.dodgedakota.net/boards/per/12532.html

If it ain't broke, fix it til it is.

You can order them from advance, autozone, jcwhitney, socaldak.com, and alot of others. The best ones are made by Cloyes and Crane Cams. One of the easiest ways to check it, is to listen for the slap of the chain on the inside of the timing chain cover.

If it ain't broke, fix it til it is.

Oh, and bye the way, I just changed mine, and I had about 7/8" of slack in the chain. It was about ready to jump tooth.

If it ain't broke, fix it til it is.

Since you have a 97, you probably don't have a tensioner. I have a 97 w/ 90K, and just replaced mine. Like cuzin, I had a lot of slack and surprised it dind't slip yet either. I was also getting a rattling/tapping noise, and that's how I figured out it was so loose. I used the double roller, and added a tensioner. It was a little difficult because there was no slack to play with, but it still went on.

You really don't have to know alot about engines to replace it...just ALOT of patience:) You have to remove practically everything from the front of the motor(A/C, power steering, water pump, all brackets to name a few) If you are unsureor don't have a weekend to work on your truck, then by all means take it to a shop to get it done. If you do yourself, just remember to replace the timing chain gasket, seal, water pump gasket, etc. You can get a complete gasket set that has all these things for about $30 from felpro(best gasket out there) If you want to put the extra money out there for piece of mind, you can replace the water pump as well since you will already have it removed($50-$80) Good Luck!

If it ain't broke, fix it til it is.

It was an all day event for me, but I took my time, was all by myself, and replaced a couple of other things. For mechanics, it is supposed to only take 4 hours or something like that. If you are going to keep the truck for a long time, another 80K miles+, I would also get the tensioner. It is about $40. You can order that off of summitt or mancini?, or get it from dodge.

With a double roller chain, there is really no need for the tensioner.

If it ain't broke, fix it til it is.

"With a double roller chain, there is really no need for the tensioner."

That's not always true. I put an Edelbrock double roller set on a V6 and before I pulled the pin on the tensioner there was quite a bit of slack. I read somewhere that the distance between the cam and crank on the 3.9L is a few millimeters less than on the 5.2L.

Thanks for the correction. I changed mine, and there almost wasn't enough slack for me to install the chain/sprockets(crane cams)

If the old chain is loose enough, yes, it can degrade performance.
