The engine warning light is illuminated on my '03 quad with 23K on it. The gas cap wasn't loose. Any ideas or common problems? Don't make me go to the dealer... Thanks

this site has all the codes. http://www.dodgetrucks.org/docs/OBD-II%20Codes.pdf

P0442-Evaporative Emission Control System Leak Detected(small leak)

probaly your gas cap. either it's not on good or it's bad. try tightening it and drive a little or change it.

I thought I just read a post that said the 1998 did not have the key on/off method to get codes.

You can always take it to advance/autozone and they will check it for free.

I beleive any OBD2 (96 and newer) Mopar has this feature.

Make sure you are turning the key to on, but not cranking the starter...

i believe Dan is right. i've read a few times one here that '98's don't have this feature. nno worry, Auto Zone scans for free.

You might want to check the 6" long vaccuum line that connects the evap test port connection "T" in engine compartment that comes off the purge valve to the rest of the plastic lines that go back to the evap cannister. Mine split and fell apart. Fixed it with new fuel line and code went away.

With only 23K on your truck, I highly doubt it is an O2 sensor.

I had the code of P0442 on my '02. Went to Car Quest and bought a replacement cap. Cleared the code by taking the negative cable from the battery for about 10 minutes. Put the new cap on, reconnected the battery cable and the code was gone and hasn't come back since and I have put over 10K on the odometer since then.

When you get the new gas cap, you will definitely feel a difference when it tightens. Just because the seals don't look bad on your gas cap, doesn't necessarily mean they aren't. I could turn my old cap as tight as it would go and it still didn't keep the code way. This has been an ongoing problem with Chrylser/Dodge vehicles. A neon I used to own did the same thing. Good luck and let us know.

Thanks for all the tips. I guess I will try a new gas filler cap. I hate to disconnect the battery to get rid of the light because of the adaptive transmission. Maybe I will just wait it out and see if it goes off.

you can reset the pcm without disconnecting the battery. you can unplug the connector nearest the firewall on the pcm for about 2 minutes then plug it back in.

that light from a bad gas cap will go out on it's own after a few starts. mine came on once because i forgot to put the cap on. it reset itself in a couple of starts.

Sure enough it was the gas cap. Napa and O'reilly were out, Autozone had a cheap looking piece of crap for $7 so I went to the dealer and got a nice replacement for $14 and replaced two stolen wheel centercaps for $16 ea.

I unhooked the neg cable overnight and replaced the cap and no more light.

Thanks guys...

rockgod - why did you pay the dealer for a new gas cap ? This is something thay should have replaced for free under the Federal Emissions Warranty. Going to the dealer for anything emissions related except for items like filters and spark plugs while you're still under 80,000 actually makes good sense. Sometimes you have to let them know you're aware of the warranty to keep them honest !

Lead, follow, or get out of the way
